Important News For Veterans Eligible disabled veterans who file ap plications for automobiles or other con \eyances under a new law recently enact ed by the Congress will have to wait for their cars until the Congress reconvenes1 and can appropriate funds to administer the Act. Veterans Administration explained that since the new law does not contain an ap propriation of funds for the cars, the agen cy will have to ask the Congress for a special appropriation when it reconvenes next January. Meanwhile, VA will accept applications under the new law and adjudieiate them. Then it will hold all completed applica tions in file until the money is available. The new Act—Public Law 187, which went into effect October 20, 1951— applies n> eligible disabled veterans of World War II and those who served in the Armed orces on and after June 27. 1950, the start of the Korean Campaign. To be eligible for automobiles or other conveyances, these veterans most be en titled to compensation for any of the fol lowing service-connected disabilities: 1. Loss or permanent loss of use of one or both feet. 2. Loss or permanent loss of use of one or both hands. 2. Complete loss of sight in both eyes or permanent impairment of vision of both eyes to the degree as to constitute virtual blindness. Under the law, VA is authorized to pay up to $1,600 toward the purchase price of on automobile or other conveyances, in cluding equipment with special attach ments and devices as VA may deem neces sary for each veteran. No money can be paid directly to the veteran. The law speci fics that no payment shall be made by the government for the repair, maintenance or replacement of any such automobile or other conveyance. The law further provides that no vet eran shall be entitled to more than one automobile or other conveyance and that* any veteran who received an outomobile* or other conveyance under previous laws •‘■hall not be entitled to another one un der the new law. -o GA1NSBORO LIBRARY (Continued from First Page) Doris Ballou of Loudon School, 76. Little Norma Jean Divers served as Mistress of Cere monies. Friday, November 16, Mrs. Virginia C. Reeves of Loudon School presented a play rt entitled “Babes in Bookland,” and al so a dramatization of Rumpelstilkins” and ‘ Drakesbill.” The characters featured in lhe playlet were as follows: Joseph Han cock and William Austin, Kings; Helen Olivia Skipper, Queen; George Flowers, lakesbill;’ Stephen Shoverly, ‘Dwarf;’ Charlie Lee and Gloria Cooper, babies; John Anderson, ‘Book Master;’ Jauneva Crowder, ‘Book Mistress;’ Howard Cooper, Major Wingfield and James Smith, sol diers. All of the remaining pupils of Mrs. Reeves’ class participated in thi program. Parents and children forming the audi ence seemed delighted with the programs for the week.
