SIDELINE VIEWS By JOHN STECK Basketball Rule Change: A revision of the one-and-one, or bonus free throw, rule against fouls will bo effective in the basketball campaign in colleges and high school now getting underway. Tire change may put in slight wrinkles in those 80-90-100 point games which have become common place On the court. The National Basketball Committee, national rules-making body, altered the collegiate rule to make the fir-L six common fouls <non shooting i in each half ... a total of 12 per game . . . just one shot violations. After the first six in each half, the rules goes back to the former way of allowing the player fouled a bonus throw if he makes the first. High school and YMCA basketball games will allow the one-shot foul on the first four common violations for each half. They also revert to the present bonus rule after that number. The old double four rule also underwent revision ior the 1957-58 season Replacing tno old loui shot awarded each team will be the center jump. Each team will be allowed to select its .jumper without regard to involvement in the fouling. ■ One other change may be seen this season often enough to merit mention here. The five-second rule designed to keep the game speed ed up lias been strengthened somewhat. That rale requires the team m possession of the ball t<> yet it into the defensive half of the court within five seconds Now officials are instructed by the new rule to call a time out and warn a team using an actionless or farcical style of play. If the team does not respond. the penalty will be a technical foul. The team behind is responsible for the speed up. A tie score puts the burden to supply action on the defensive fiv• or the team without the ball. Grid Officials’ Salute: The Southside Virginia Football Coache- Association has select ed H. L. "Butch" Blanton for its. first honorary membership. The Nottoway county superintendent of schools was tapped for that honor here Tuesday night. The unanimous honor voted by the active members of the two year-old association who handle something approaching 100 games a year in the 12-school, far-flung District 3. was in appreciation for Blanton's years of work, on behalf of high school rports and for his wise and tireless leadership In the years preceding organization of the association. As in the earlier touch-and-go days when officiating was a loose, get-em-where-you-ean proposition. Blanton Tuesday nignt liad a few words of wise guidance to offer. He thanked the association then urged the officials: ‘‘To keep yourself Infoimed. keep organized." You have a won derful area to serve in and you're performing a fine service." Jim Hickey, backfield coach at North Carolina, was the banquet speaker. He gave art illuminating talk on the football organization at Carolina under Jim Tatum's direction. Hickey brought along films of the North Carolina-Navy game and made running comments on plays and plavers in Ural contest which Carolina won 13-6. The*former Hampden-Sydney College coach also had a word for the officials' group, urging them to approach their work with the same zeal as coaches and players. , "The outcome is just as vital to the coaches and players in a Crevve-Farmville game as in a Duke-Carolina game, and officials should never forget that," Jim said. "And if you’re going to call infractions, start at the beginning. 'i he worst thing to do is overlook penalty situations at midfield then start getting tight when one team or the oilier gets inside the ten," Hickey said.
