That Is what several of the chief's friends last night when they saw the new white soft headpiece set jauntily upon the top of his thief catching apparatus. Some of them tried to remove it to get a closer in spection, but the chief was afraid to trust them, and kindly told them "hands off" in much the same way as he would say "hands up" while taking into custody some of the Worst criminals. To appreciate this hat one must know its history. Some time ago the chief captured some crooks who had stolen $600 worth of furs out of an M. & St. L. car. As a token of their appreciation, the firm which owned the furs sent him a fine new hat. Through some inadvertence they neg lected to pay the express, and "yes terday, when it reached its destina tion, the chief was obliged to "cough lip" a little hard earned dough to get possession fOLETSHOMr-nSEAR Ar ehftOrrni vafm. rare.
