Walker, who has been spending her vacation at her brother's, C. G. Walker's. Fraak Townshend had another sheep and lamb killed by dogs Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Ralph Willard and child of Palmer, Mass., are visiting at C. O. Reed's. Mrs. Augustus Chandler of Guilford was a recent guest of Mr. and Mrs. Adin Dutton. Mr. and Mrs. George Shel don and daughter went to Greenfield. Mass., Tuesday. Birthday Anniversary Celebrated. The 65th birthday anniversary of Mrs. Eliza T. Kelley occurred Satur day, July 25, and 22 of her near rela tives made a holiday of the event and surprised her by a visit, bringing ice cream, sandwiches, cakes and all the good things that make up a picnic din ner. The tables were set on the lawn and 20 guests enjoyed the repast. Mu sic by Mrs. Charles Brazor, organist; Charles Brazor, cornetist; and Ches ter Sargent, clarionet, enlivened the day. Harry Sargent sang several selec tions and sociability and merriment filled the hours. Pleasant memories of the day as well as numerous pres ents were left for Mrs. Kelley, while an enjoyable day was spent by the guests. TOWHSHKXS, A valuable thoroughbred Durham cow, belonging to Mr. Rutter, was in jured recently by the freight train so she had to be killed. Eail Knapp lost a horse reoently. It was injured by a kick in the head and had to be killed. Mary and Roxana Gage of Fitch burg, Mass., are visiting at J. H. Ware's. Dr. E A. Landman of Dan ville, N. H., was in town recently. franit Li'vermore and family of Fitch burg, Mass. , are visiting at F. F. Liv ermore's. Last week as Mrs. Metcalf was rid Ing with Mrs. Brown near the cream ery in Newfane, she was thrown out of tne wagon, the wheel passing over her leic arm and producing a bad flesh wound. Mrs. Brown had just whipped up the horso and the sudden starting up around a curve caused the acci deut. An organ recital will be (riven at the congregational church Wednesday eve ning, Aug. 5, by Mrs. Cyrus Hamlin of Tougaloo university, Tougaloo, Miss. The recital is under the charge of the ladies' missionary society of the Towns hend church and the proceeds are to be aevoted to tne ueneht of Tougaloo uni versity, which is one of the higher schools for the negroes under the Amer ican missionary association. Mrs. Hamlin will be assisted bv Edwin H. Miller, the well-known baritone. This occasion will afford an opportunity at once of enjoying good music and of helping an educational work of very great importance. Opening of the Summer School. The summer school opened Monday with a rather small attendance, but the work goes on with interest. Tues day evening a reception was held in the seminary hall for the instructors aad teachers. Quite a number were present and a short program was car ried out. Piano solo, Josephine Taft; violin duet, Winnifred and Cristabel Garfield; vocal solo, Esther Dale; pi nno solo, Mrs. Hamlin of Touiroloo, Miss. Refreshments of cake and lem onade were served. Goodhue of West Parish supplied the Congregational pulpit Sunday morning in exchange with Mr. Hayward. Ethel Knapp, while helping in the hayfields Saturday, fell from the hay rack, cutting her arm quite badly. Mrs. P. R. Bradbury, who has been quite sick for several weeks past, has recovered sufficiently to go to Green River to visit relatives. Rev. Mr. Metcalf went away Monday for a two weeks' vacation. He will spend It mostly in New Jersey. There will not be any services at the Metho dist church during his absence. Postmaster Bailey received a ton of mail matter Monday from Frederick L. Houghton, secretary of the Holntein Friesian association. For convenience of handling without overcrowding th office, this mail was sorted at the rail way station and was skilfully accom plished in a few hours by H. L. Bailey, H. P. Creon Miner who was operated upon for appendicitis Wednesday at the Far ren hospital in Montague, is doing well. The ladies society will meet with Mrs. Russell Cutting at Green River Thursday of next week, in the morn ing. The program for the next regular grange meeting, Aug. 12, will consist of recitations, readings and a piano duet by Mrs. Mary Bullock and Miss Minnie Thayer. Question : What of the importance and necessity of restor ing soil fertility removed by growing crops? Last Wednesday morning during the heavy shower lightning struck an ash tree in the cemetery. It is 18 inches through and was taken off. eight feet from the ground, taking off all the bark. It fell on to an iron fence bend- ng it somewhat and came near hitting two monuments. Ransom Akley is in poor health. He is obliged to go on crutches owing to varicose veins and rheumatism. It is especially hard for Mr. Akley at this time of the year and on account of so much sickness in his family for the past two years. Mrs. Akley is very much improved in health but unable to work much. The ladies' society elected the fol lowing officers Thursday: President, Mrs. L. E. Jaquith; vice president, Mrs. Emma Alexander; secretary and treasurer, Mrs. George Prouty ; direc tresses, Mrs. H. J. Richmond, Mrs. L. J. Miner went to Montague Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Davis of Orange, Mass., visited at E. W. Legate's last week. Albert Thayer of Albany, N. Y., and Claude Carr of Brattleboro are at E. W. Miner's for a few weeks' stay. May, the little daughter of J. A. Clark, is on the sick list. Mrs. Kate Howard has left the employ of F. E. Ward and is stopping for the present with Mrs. E. W. Legate. Bessie Morse of Springfield, Mass., visited in town last week. Mrs. Warren Ingraham and children of New Britain, Conn., re turned home last week after several weeks visit with Mrs. Ingraham's parents. CSarles Preston of North Adams, Mass., is in town. Mrs. Susan Larrabee is in Brattleboro for a few days visiting. Mrs. Ira Lar rabee did not go to Michigan as re ported. Corinne Hall has come from Boston where she has been attending school since last fall. Stone Clark have bought the grass on the Hescock place and have commenced to cut it. Miss Bertha Clark has returned from the seashore where she has been for a few days. Albert Thurber has moved to 13 Chestnut street, Brattleboro. H. D. There is to be a social dance at the Fullerton this evening and an enjoya ble time is anticipated. G. Harold Ellis of Nortbfield has been engaged as principal of the High school the coming year. Mr. Ellis is a man of experience and will undoubt edly give the school a good adminis tration. The Windsor and Rutland county sum mer school opened Monday with a good attendance of teachers. The citizens of Chester tendered the teachers of the school a reception Thursday evening and a very enjoyable evening was re ported by all. The band concert last week Wednes day evening was enjoyed by all who beard it and it is hoped that the bovs will be able to play every week. The concert last evening drew quite a crowd and was a fitting prelude to the teachers' reception. Percy Learned of New York is home for a short visit. Miss Annie Sumner and Mrs. S.M. Sumner are at the Ful lerton for the summer. Frank P. Wells, contractor and builder, has moved into the east tenement in the Pierce block and will have his office there. Everett Peabody has engaged to work for Fred Farr of Wst Swan zey, N. H., and will leave for his new position next week. Geo. Hall's new house is rapidly growing and will be one of the best in town. As Gus Smith and his father-in-law, George Hooker, were driving on Chan dler hill Sunday they came across two large rattlesnakes side by side. The horse was very much frightened, but Mr. Hooker succeded in killing both snakes. Mrs. Lizzie Hastings saw one on the Derby bill the same day, but it got away.
