ON nOARU V. S. . GEORGE
W VSHINQTON, Dec. 10. (By Wireless
to the Associated Press. I President
Wilson stood on I he bridge of Hie
George Washington late yesterday and
saw a I'nitcd Slates destroyer stage a
thrilling demonstration of the work of
repulsing a submarine attack. A touch
of realism was given by the drill of
the men on board the liner and the con
voying ships.
The great liner was gliding through
the tropical vaters like u chip on a
duck pond, when bugle: ami alarm bells
ciiled the men lo battle stations. 1'reBI- ,

destroyer which had been lagging
far astern, suddenly leaped forward,
her funnels vomiting smoke and white
spray dashing from her bow as she
tore through the water at a clip of 30
knots an hour. The destroyer came
abeam of the liner and dropped depth
bombs, sending great geysers high Into
the air as the warship sig-tsgged its
way through the waters beneath which
was supposed to lurk the enemy sub
marine. Each explosion was distinctly
felt on board the r.eorge Washington.

the vessel.
President Wilson was most interest

questions about it, going into the mo.st
minute detail.
The George Washington passed Into
the Azores ihls morning, and turned
northward, on the last leg of the voy
age. There was no stop at the Azores.
President Wilson Drobably will not

conference, This is considered tilting
because the conference will be held in
France.
President v llson I disposition Is in
favor of entirely public proceedings,
such as Rre carried on in the senate
chamber at Washington, with the press
representatives given every facility to
report certain business. Naturally
there will be need of secrecy, as there
is in the foreign relations committee,
but the president's Idea Is that the pro
feature could be much the (tame as at
Washington, a committee considering
the cowTidentia! and delicate features
of various' questions, and then report
ing back to the peace congress for ac
tion.
The president unexpectedly altended
