They Mi a-re billed to step eight rounds in the l imi nan oi a aouoie winaup ana a BY GREAT PLAY Tilden and Johnston Too Strong for Australasians and Sweep Them Off Their Feet by Ther Wizardry. " AUCKLAND, N. Z., Decfsi. Aus tralailia lost her tennis laurels here this afternoon before the strength and craft of American challengers. The Payis cup, the trophy emblem atic - of , the world's team tennis championship, changed hands when the last ball in the tenth game of the fourth set was driven out of the court, and for the next year at least the clip will repose under the Stars and Stripes. This is the fourth time America has won the cup. Austra lasia has won it six times, while the British Isles have been triumphant on five occasions. Rallying after losing the first set of today's ' doubles match, William T. Tilden, II, of Philadelphia, and Wil liam M. Johnston, of San Francisco, revealed the same tennis wizardry that carried them gloriously through the matches yesterday. Their oppo nents, Norman E. Brookes and Ger ald F. Patterson, the Australasian masters of the game, fought desper ately to steam the tide of defeat, but were outplayed clearly by the Yan kees. The score of the match shows how the Americans won the victory. The challengers lost the first set, 4 to 6, but never again permitted Brookes and Patterson to taste victory, win ning the three remaining sets, 6-4, 6-0 and 6-4. v Modest in Victory. Tilden and Johnston were modest in victory. They walked quietly to the net, where they were met by Brooke and Patterson, who congratulated them as the throng that had witness ed the stirring match chPered. Throughout the . entire 'match Brookes was below his usual dou bles form. He played will, but never reached the heights he attained in past tennis battles. Johnston de serves the most credit for the Amer ican victory.-- His service games were won by lightning shots to the weak spots in his opponents' armor, and hit drives were certain winners where there t was the' slightest chance for a bieak through. In many volleying rallies he beat Brookes by sheer merit, but at times he was slow in going to the net. Tilden did not show as severe a service as he flashed in. the singles yesterday, and he was not at his best at doubles. He often was out of position, but extricated himself from bad situations by the brilliancy of Urge Legislation , To Guard Mater jiity NEW YORK, Dec 81. Enactment of laws in all states to eo-operat with the federal government in pro tecting maternity, particularly among working women, was urged by speak ers at the closing sessions of the fourteenth annual meeting of the American Association for Labor Leg islation here. Restriction of employment, cash benefits to offset loss of earnings and fret medical care were declared to be trie pressing need to overcome an in rasing mortality rate for both moth, rs and infants. . Dr. Richard Bolt, general director tt the American Child Hygiene as sociation, said it was a "condemning fact that in this enlightened age and prosperous country more women be- i tween IS and 45 years of age lose j, their lives from conditions connected with chll birth than from any other caase except tuberculosis." More thr. 23,000 mothers died under these conditions In the United States dur ing, the past year, he sal'. .. NELSON A REFEREE. NEW YORK, Dec. SI.
