nst evening , six upon Knrnain street ,
rom Ninth to Fifteenth , nno at the
corner o ( Fifteenth nnd Douglas and
mo at the corner of Fifteenth nnd
) odgo. The contract requires that
eight streams shall bo thrown nbovo
a height of 110 feet. ITho whole
eight in this instance were thrown
considerably higher than 110 feet nt
ono time , with aomo wind prevailing
against. Citv Engineers llosowator
nnd Tillotaon were stationed upon the
lill with instruments and took the
noasuro , while Messrs. Corby and
Throne * , of the council committee on
vntor works nnd sewerage , were also
ircsunt to note the height of the
streams.
The BtroaniB were thrown for a
ongth of three quarters of nn hour ,
Mid over n height of 135 foot ; which is
45 foot higher than the dome of the
oporn house.
There were five 1 inch nozzles , ono
_ inch nozzle , and two 1 | inch noz
zles U'od in the test , throwing moro
irate r than is called for , the contract
equiring only eight streams from or.o
noli nozzles. This waa mndo neces
sary by the breaking of two or three
lozzlos.
At the clooo of the eight-stream
eat all hydrants woVe shut oil' except
; ho ono nt the Wabnsh corner , when
, lmt BitiRh Btronin wns tested ns to its
capability of throwing water over the
opera house. A stream wns thrown
diagonally ncross the dome upon the
roar portion of the building , which is
across the highest point required , in
order to cover it a stream
from 105 to 175 foot long. The
wind wns blowing quite hard ,
but for nil that the water wont
clear over it , ns was soon by n B
ropnrlor and others , who stood in
front of McMnhon & Abort's drug
store. In this test ono pump only
was used , which was run nt the rate
of twenty-eight strokes per minute ,
and the whplo town wns nt the time
being supplied with water , every
valve being opened. The consump
tion at this time of dny is moro than
nt nny other , nnd duiini ; the test wan
at the rate of 1,300,000 gallons for
twenty-four honrn ,
A funny incident occurred on the
corner of'Fifteenth nnd Fa-mum when
that hydrant was opened. The hose
burstod just back of the nozzle , whicl
waa hold by three men. They dropped
it in n hurry nnd ran. The troinon
deus force of the stream caused tin
hose to gyrate nnd twist and cnvor
around like u wounded snnko just be
fore sun-down , and the spectators
who utood on either aide of the stroe
Hod to the inside of the houses for
safety from n wotting. ] Joforo the
hydrant could bo turned elF , the nozzle
zlo was jerked clear oil' , nnd the
length of hose to which it was nt
tachod ruined.
The streets nt each corner where
hydrant was located were deluged nni
the pedestrians had to run a regular
gauntlet under the shotlor of umbrellas
las through the shower which fol
around ,
