Ciiiciiiiiati Lottolrl The now widely known bootblnck , Jack O'lluru , first saw the sun rise in Toronto , Canada , on tlio lUth clay of August , 18.)8. Jack was tlio youngest of twelve children who blessed the union of his parents , When scarcely ono year olu the family removed to C'iu- nlnnati , where , with tlio exception of n few month spent in Cleveland , Jack's whole life has been passed , and ho pos sesses , all the traits of energy und pluck that makes u typical Queen City man. His first business venture was selling papers the old Times , then owned by Starbuck , now dead. lie next embarked in the boot-blacking trade , tmd under his skill and persever- ence it has risen in his ease almost to the dignity of a profession. "When ho began , such things as comfortable chairs ami carpeted platforms on almost every square were never dreamed of. In 1871 lie fell from a street car coming homo from Forepaugh's circus , and was most horribly mangled. His right leg was amputated below the knee and his left foot was cut olT. During his illness ono of his sisters and his father , and shortly afterward his mother , died. It might t-eem that these misfortunes would have a depress ing olTcct upon the spirits and weak ened energies of the crippled boy , but the very opposite was the result. Emer gency made him great. Ho ro-o nbovu the sorrows of his surroundings and took up the burden of life like a hero. From that time Jack was the main stay of the household. He supported his brothers and sisters and sent them to school , notwithstanding thtit they were older than ho. And ho did it all with his brush. Every day , rain or shine the indefatigable fellow could bo seen Third street among the bankers and brokers with his box an his shoul der , hobbling along on his crutches. In a little time ho had a monopoly of the bankers' and brokers' trade , and has held it over since. For years his headquarters have been at the ojlico of Harry Morohcad , Harper's ex-broker and manipulator of Cincinnati , Hamil ton it Dayton stock , whcro ho is a trusted confidential friend of the great broker. A year or moro ago Jack secured - cured a stand in the corridor of Cham ber of Commerce , where ho lias hud full sway ever since. It is safe to say no man on 'change was over moro respected than tlio pleasant-faced , broad-chested , honest Jack. But when it came to taking him in as a brotijer member things were dif ferent. When his application for mem bership was presented there was a com motion. The idea of n bootblack becoming - coming u member of the chamber of commerce was shocking to the refined sensibilities of the " gentlemen , " and not to bo tolerated. They tried to shelve it , but .Tack and his old sriend Morohead were not to bo put off that way , and they pushed it to an issue and were beaten. Morohead argued that ho had trusted Jack time and npiin with thousands of dollars , and know him to bo equal to any moinber in integrity , and that his business was bet tor than that of u saloonkeeper , and they were admitted unquestioned. Hut it was without avail. As ono result of rejecting Jack's application Mike Heister , ono of the most prominent plumbers of the chamber , and u saloon- ibt , was compelled to stop out. Jack takes his defeat with all the philosophy of u pessimist. His proud spirit is undaunted , and it is safe to say that notwithstanding his defeat the time will como when some of his "bet tors" will find in him a formidable busi ness adversary , for ho will not fihino shoes alwavs. Ho has laid by u very considerable sum of money , is well edu cated , and smarter than moot men ot his day. His familiarity witli stocks and bonds is astonishing , and when ho does go into u higher class of business lie will bo amply able to take euro of htm- belt. belt.la la penwual appearance , above big um- llnted lower Hmbs ho I * rt innpnjfieont specimen of manhood , with u handsolno. 'net1 ' , that would attract attention in nn.\ rathoriniJ. The head Is massive1 , tlio row high nnd broad. , ln everything nit crippled limbs Jack O'llaru is ubuvi the average a man. During the first great flood , In 1SS1' , Jack was appointed on the purchasing committee for the relief of Hood culTor- crs , in which position ho handled largo ms of inoncy. Ho worked like a lion * light and day while the distress and lunger o.xlsti'd. The exposure at this HM'iod brought on sickness which con- Ined him in bed for weeks. In addition ils mangled leg troubled him , pores ireaklng out and pieces of decayed lone beginning to appear. Despite all lis misfortune Jack "hung on. " deter- niued to "do or die , " and began to iltraet the favorable notice of the .tankers , brokers and professional men on Third street. Jack's two sisters ire now living ono in Newport and ono in CovingUm each the head of a prosperous family. A brother is in bus- ness in Chicago.and another is u brass- Inishcr in this city. In the twenty-one , 'oars Jack has been on the "street" ho las acquired u competence , and not jnl.y that , but won the confidence of jusiness man in that part of the city. There is not a breath of suspicion igalnst him. lie has worked himself up against odds which would have over whelmed others of less will , force and energy , and instead of being county or city charge in some in Urinary , his sturdy , broad-chested figure , lioncst , ruddy face has become a familiar sight. Jack manages io move around on crutches about as rapidly as other pco- > lo who are blessed with u good pair of egs. A Chronic 'IVnileiioy Overcome. Many persons uro troubled with a chronic tendency to constipation. They ire of billions temperament. Tlio com- iilaiiit to which they are subject , though easily remediable by judicious treat ment , is in many cases aggravated by a resort to drastic purgatives and chola- ogues. As the human stomach and bowels uro lined with u delicate mem brane , and not with vulcanite , they can not stand prolonged drenching with such medicines without serious injury. Nothing restores and counteracts an liabitual tendency to constipation so cf- Fectually as Hosteller's Stomach Hitters. Its la.xfitivc effect is gentle and progres sive. It neither convulses nor weakens the intestines , and its etTectft arc unac companied by griping pains. It arouses the liver when the organ is sluggish , promotes digestion and encourages ap- iiotito and sleep. For fever and ague , ddney troubles , nervous complaints , mil incipient rheumatism it is inconmr- iblo. Take u wineglass before meals and see how soon you will relish them. KxplorlnK Greenland. New York Sun : In February last Lieutenant Bloeh and Lieutenant Hyder , of the Danish navy , made an interesting journey along the west coast of Green land. Their ambitious purpose was , of course , to travel north until they reached the Cape York natives , the most north ern inhabitants of the world. If they had succeeded their journey would have been among the most noteworthy of Arctic undertakings , for they would hiivo been able to trace the coast line of the great Melville bay. which is almost wholly unknown , as the shore ice at most points prevents vessels from approaching preaching anywhere near the coast. With eight sledges they advanced about seventy miles south of Upernavik , al most to the southern shores of Melville bay , and past the solitary stone known UK tlio Devil's Thumb , which , as seen from ships , has been pictured in many books of Arctic travel. The heavy trav eling and severe weather prevented them going further , and it is now quite certain that the coast of Melville bay will never bo explored in the win ter .season. The result of this journey justifies the criticism that met the pro ject of a Washington ollicial , who gravely suggested sending a sledge party to take this very route in winter , after wo had heard of Garlington's fail ure to reach Greoly. Ciiro of AVrcnchert Npinc. How many men given to heavy labor go through life with u kind of hitch in the backbone caused by wrenching at some period of their younger days. Let all such take heed from the following letter : LYDONVIU/T ; , OIII.EAXS Co , , N. Y. , Mar. S , ISSIi. Some years ago , while loading sheep on the railroad , 1 badly wrenched my back. I was eon lined to my bed for four weeks , being partially parali/.cd. As I could get no relief , 1 put on my spine three AU.COUK'S Pf.AbTKits from the small of my back up between my shoulders. From that day I began to got Bettor , buffering less pain all the time. I put fresh plasters on every ten days , and in a month I was well and at tending to my business. C. R.
