RAILWAY NEWS FOR WALL STREET Mo Material Change In Com Oats Iloinnlii Steady Provisions . Up n Fraction Cattlb Dull . And ItntlioiWeak. . G1UCAOO PltonUOIS MARKETS. CHICAGO , Juno 17 , [ Special Telegram to TUB llKis.1 Wheat hero and In New York , as well as at minor markets , opened anywhere - where from J c to IJ c higher timn Satur day1 ! ) closing range. The wheat pit on the Chicago board of trade hi not been so crowded with traders In tnontus. As the result proved , iirotty nearly everybody had joino wheat for salo. Trading at and around the beginning was on a basis of 7SU c@30. ' c for July and TScgTS' c for December. This was about Ic bettor for July than was ob- talnablo nt tlio clone of business Saturday , and Jfo better for December. Around SOo seemed to bo thopolnt marked in the specu lative mind as the top for the present , at least. Tlio IOIIRS looked upon SOo as a good llRUro to Roll out their hold- n KB and the bears to put out fresh llr.cs. Tlio consequence was that the market , biff , broad and strong ai It scorned In bo on tno surface , wns overwhelmed under a load of offerings , nnd prlcc.3 broko. Tlio break did not get fairly started until about noon ; July had settled back in the meantime to Wc , and once It col to " ® \ De cember had alsoyicldcd somewhat , and hunt ; nt 770. . All the morning conllictlng reports came In about rains in the northwest. The weather bulletin did not mention mln , but the barometer \v\w low up lucre , and the Indications pointed strongly to rain. Private advices on the subject were ilatly contradic tory. and the sntno was true as to advleei on the northwestern crop prospacts. Farmers anil .others , WHO wrote or wlrctl to their neents or friends , had a great deal to say about the danuiRO already done , and about the urpent need of rain at once ; whllo strange to say , practically everything from railroad sources was directly the other way. This pave ground for the openly expressed suspicion that tlio railroad reports nro being given out for Wall street digestion , rather than for the Information of the grain trade. The most sensational item that Wits "sprung" on the floor was the state ment that cash wheat had broken lOo In St. Louis. A little bit of cqucc/o was run In St. Louis last week , and it scorned to have cul minated Saturday. The caal\ wheat maricet in that place , to day , got back Klc nearer its proper relations with Juno nnd July. That wns nil there wns to the lOo break , but it served the purpose of causing a vicious break in the futures here. The crowd In the pit , from being strongly and aggressively bullish , became inton&cly and uureseivcdly bearish , and was in th.it mood at tlio close. Un doubtedly a great mass of long wheat was. unloaded and a great lot of wheat was sold eiort. Some think that it Is now n "short market , " instead of a "lone mr.rket. " the short Interest being especially heavy in December. July broke to 76 e , nnd De cember to 70Jf c ; gauged by Saturday's clos ing range , this showed' n decline of } { c to , ? fc ; and by the top prices of the morning a break of lc to'lte , The last prices were at n alight recovery , viz : Juno bOKc , July 7SKc , September 7" . . . IJcecmbor . dealings were on n very largo Bcalo ; Tlutclilnson was a bidder curly "for effect , " nnd n tremendous seller ti\l tlio rest of tlio day. Ilo'contrlDutcd largely to tilling the crowd up. ' ' ' ' The corn market ruled steady and flrm , in i _ i > fto of some reasons which , at llr.st , ap peared to promise n dlftcrent result. The receipts were much heavier tlinn had been estimated on Saturday , nnd for Tuesday tlio estimate was for 6W3 cars. Export clearances were very light , and orders on either side of the market scarce. The early strength in wheat wns considered a favorable feature by the speculators in corn. Business iu the speculative branch of trade was small , and dually local in character. Tlio fluctuations wcro narrow nnd prices show following changes from Saturday's closing ( Inures : Juno , July nnd August , } u higher , ami Sep tember nt the same ns on the closing day of the previous weoK. Oats were stronger early , with trading from ) c to } e advance , and this was fol lowed by n decline of } fo. The strength at the opening was attributed to a sympathy with wheat , but the increased offerings at tlu top proved too much , as there was a lack ol demand except nt old prices. Speculative tiadinp was not heavy , and nu unusually largo dccrcaso in the visible supply did not affect tlio course of values. July sold up to SSWfiJBajtfc. and baplt to Ki fc , with Septem ber at , ! 52i2J ( i' , early , to 2JM3)4C5 ! ( | Oc tober was offered at 22X@23c. No. 2 , rcgu lar , was quiet around 'itia In provisions the week opened without much stir. Early In the session indications of increased outside buying made Dork ad vance quickly 15c , and short ribs from 2 to DC. Lard , however , was practically nndis turhuu , nnd failed to sympathize with it companion articles. The upward turn in short ribs and pork proved , subsequently , to be poorly supported and was soon followet by an easier feeling. Trading In the specu lative way was spasmodic , and , upon thr whole , under the average. Unaed on Satur day's ' last , prices , porlt closed unchanged to Cc higher , nnd lard and short ribs unchanged to ' Mc higher. CHICAGO JjIVK STOCK. CHICAGO. Ju.no 17. [ Special Telegram to Tun BED.
