More Favorable Outlook Tor Provis ions Cnttlo Slow nnd Active. CHICAGO PHODUCE MAUICET3. CHICAGO , March 13. | Special Telegram to THE BEE. ] The strength which developed In wheat today was a surprise to those who sold for n down turn early on the very pleasant weather. No ono waa moro surprised perhaps than Mr. Hutchlnson , who sold several hundred thousand bushels tho. first half hour and perhaps 1,000,000 bushels be fore the ndvanco fairly sot In. Ills was the only selling of the day up to 1 o'clock. The market started steady at 7S ? c for May. The heavy selling referred to put the price off to 78J c , but very frco buying by W. G. McCorrnlck & Co , and Jones ft Kennott helped to stop n decline nnd later news helped to put the trade In n better buying mood. To begin with , private cables wore nbout the only support of the market. Then there was a confirmation of the rumored injury to the wheat fields In Tennessee and Kentucky by letter nnd by wire. Then the Price Current estimate giving 800,000 bush els less of exportable surplus than Dodge gave early In the week was received. Then followed reports of sales of cash wheat , by Dunn & Co. for export iind udvlccs from Sawyer , Wallace & Co. , Now York , that sixteen loads had been taken there for Lisbon. On the top of this Boydon & Co. , it was said , bought 45,000 bushels of No : 2 red wheat J c under May. The clearances helped still more. Gradually tuS this information mation was received the market gained strength. Jones & Kennott bought still more heavily. Cottrcll of Now York bought hero freely. Logan & Co. nnd Schwartz & Dupco Joined the buying forces. Even Hutctilnson , after his enormous sales early , bought quite a round lot on the ndvanco around 78-c/c. / The bulge took May up to 78. ° tf@78Jio nt noon with a slight drop to 78K @ ? bXc , and on a second and stronger bulge the price wont to 70c just at 1 o'clock. June sold at 7778J < fc nnd July nt 70 ( Ji57fl5ic. The last half hour naw nscramolo for wheat. Hutchtnson called all "calls" around 78tf $ 78J/C nnd proceeded to take wheat. Every body else wanted it and offerings were light. Mny touched 70c on the strong bulge and closed nt 70J o. Other closing urices were : March 78c , Juno 70e , July 77e. Corn was traded In to a moderate extent within narrow limits. The feeling was steady early and firmer later nnd transac tions were within narrow limits. Opera tions were uiniuly of n local character , the selling being mainly by parties against pur chases In thdcountry , nnd the demand cou- Hnod to room operators. A largo trader sold freely of May and purchased April. There was a very pressing demand for May nt 20 c. The speculative market opened n shndn under the closing prices of yesterday , was easy and sold off some , ruled flrmur and closed ii triilo better than yesterday. Cash property was in fair supply , the demand moderate nnd prices without any special chance. No. 'J was In moderate demand and sold nt 23 C28J c and closed at 2S , ' e. No. 2 yellow sold at 2jO and closed ut 28 ; ! ® 'JSJ.jC. No. 3 sold in n special locution in 8CJffct27c ( and closed nt 2G@27c , depending on location. No. 3 yellow was quotable } { Q premium over No. 3 , with nothing doing. Oats were traded in with moro /ro'edom but the feeling was steady and tbo range of prices was narrow. A largo operator sold May freely at 2lj @ 21ifnnd buyers liad uo difllculty In securing all they wanted nt these figures. This prevented any advance. A little moro trading was noted In Juno nnd July nnd sales wore at n j o advance. March remained neglected. Car lots of No. 2 in stern were dull but quiet ut 20u. No. 2 white was slow nt 22 | o for May. In provisions the conditions uro very favorable - orablo for moro.busiu ss and higher prices. During the dull season quito n short interest developed In all products in the pit. The key to the linn fooling now seams to bo at the yards. The receipts of hogs are falling nway below .the estimates nnd below Just year. 'Tho prices of hogs have been muking small advances lately on natural conditions. This IIUH started n buying of hog products. Then shorts nro nervous nnd when they attempt to cover the market moves up away from tiiem , The strength started In per ! : und later wits felt in ribs. The feature of the day was the buy ibg by Tno clique of houses of last fall Nor ton & Worthltigton , Chandler & Brown nnd Buxter & Co. Mny pork sold nt $10.25 ® 10.27K to § 10.50 to $10.4'J , @ 10,47W at the close. July was a little changed. Snort ribs sold up to $5.UO$5.07 ( > 4 for May and $5.15 ® 5.17K for July. The nl- Ipgcd cnusoof this unexpected turn was u lack of the usual export demand , that olo- incnt of trade being forced out on account of the inability to got steamer space on outgo ing steamers , The effect of this down turn was felt all around , nnd nbout everything in the beef line sold n shndo lower. It will not boa patched- up settlement cither , ns the Burlington proper is pledged to the protection of Its not earnings und Its officers huvo the public's confidence. It U un uncertain question how much of the short Interest lu western stocks was covered on tbo bulge late yesterday. The popular belief is that much of the short sates nro still outstanding and may bo obliged to cover at a greater cost. The llrst action this morning was la keeping with the strong and nctlvo closing yesterday. There was u rush to buy and the continuing nnxs lety of operators on the short side to cover their contracts made llrnt prices generally from lj to } per cent better than the clos ing llgurcs of last evening , whllo Burling ton nnd Qulnoy was up Hi" , at 105 > $ and Rock Island 1 per cent at 05.
