tary of AgrIcuiltumo , Washington , D. C. : Sir-
I submit tIto following report of some bxperl-
ments marie by me with the "Jerusalem
corn" which I received from your department
In the spring of 1893 ;
I planted twelve rows of Jerusalem corn
on thin 1st of June , 1895 , The rows were 108
feet long and tlureq feet apart , and the space
between tue stalks of commi in the rows was
three Inches , The ground had been worked
thin year before , but lund not produced anything -
thing , and I did not manure It. The corn
was up ten days after planting , anti I
weeded it twice and cultIvated it ( three times
durIng the season , with a hoe. On the 20th
of August the stalks stood five and six feet
high , and the beads were well matured. I
cut them off wIth a knife on tbaat date. The
yield was twelve bushels of large sized
heads , weighing 500 pounds. The grain is
white and fiat , and not qtiite the size of pop
corn , while the stalk hears a general resemblance -
semblance to sorghum. I hail planted In the
same field with tue Jerttsalem corn patches
of field , pop and sweet corn , whIch grew and
ilourishied up to the 20th of July , wjien they
all curled and fleet and diii not produce anything -
thing , whIle the Jerusalem corn was green
and growing finely , notwithstanding the lack
of moisture and ( lie hot winds. Patches of
lCaiUr corn , planted not very tar from where
( lie Jerusalem corn stood , curleul up , fired and
cover headed. A forty.acmo tract of Ibelul corn
a half block away shared a fate similar to
that of thus Kaifir corn. The prevailing conditions -
tions In this part of Gage county during the
season of 1895 could not have been Illuch
worse for growing corn , and yet , In the face
of It all , the Jerusalem corn came out ahearl.
I have experimented with ( liii corn for the
last three seaon. , and my experience Is thaat
thin Jerusalem corn will produce a good crop
when all other corn wouhui prove a falluro ,
and is the corn for states where crops are
uncertain on accotlilt of insutlIcient moisture
to mature them. or where the season Is a
short one , Respectfully yours.
