The Reneral business situation can hardly l > e trnlil to present any new features of Im portance , the conditions remaining about the name ns noted a week ngo. There IB noth- ItiK to be trained by denying the fact thnt business lm not experienced the expected Iniptovemcnt since tlie first of the year. In Omahn It wao hardly antlclpnti-d thot there would be nny very marked Improve ment , owing to the scarcity of mousy In tributary territory , but In the couiury-nt- larRc a general revival of business had been cxpcrtcd. With few exceptions the business Int..MB of the whole country appear to lo itiiowing' the waiting policy. Whin the jiutLbsB of the last bond Issue was an nounced It was believed there would be an upwind movement In the buslnau world , but It did not come. There arc nppArontlj' other causes still that must'be gotten out of the : way before activity In trade circles ian btct.nifl a reality. li .the meantime Omaha appsirs IP l-c keeping up with the country at larse , nnd while the Improvement over last jcnr Is email this section averages up about as well as the balance of the continent. During the past week the bank clearings show nn In crease , RH compared with the corrcsnandlng period or las < t year of 1.G per cent , will Id the nvuinRo gain for the whole roiinti ; ' was only C.7 per cent. The only city In this sec tion that rcportn u large gain Is Minneapolis , while Kansau City shows a decrease of 5.2 per cent , Denver 7.5 , and St. Joseph IS 2 per cent. St. 1'nul shows a gain of 6 per pent nut ) Sioux City n falling off of oVcr.10 per cent. It tlm bank clearings arc any Indica tion they would seem to prove that Omaha Is nit doing so badly after all as compared with other western and northwestern cities. Moat houses report a fair business doing nnd a slight gnlri.over corresponding periods of last year. In some Instances very large- gains arc pointed out , but they are to bo explained us the result of Roma special cause , such nn the going out of business of ono house nnd the division of Its business between the remaining houses. The volume of business doing H on an avcrngo just a llttlu larger than last year. There Is a feeling that the period of de pression has been more prolonged than the ticcspteil theories' say It should be , nnd that by this time the country ought to be emerg ing from It. For that reason n good many bu&'ness ' men are looking for Improvement in the near future unless some local cause prevents It.LIVE LIVE STOCK TIIADE. business at South Omaha Is stll ! light , nnd llvero Is no apparent reason for an ticipating any Immediate gain. The receipts of ad kinds of live stock are light- and the volume of business doing is In consequence Hmall. At the samn time , other markets nre doing a largo business , and there Is nothing in the condition of the country to \vnirant the situation being such as It Is at South Omaha. As a matter of fact , there nro less catllo feeding In Nebraska than usual , but If all the cattle In the state that arc going forward to market were coming to South Omaha there would be no Just cause for complaint. Such Is not the case , however , as there are plenty of cattle KoliiK out of the state lo other markets under the Influence of more favorable rates , or from other causes. The same thing 1 ? true of hogs , thousands of head being shipped from the South Plntto country to swell the receipts of other markets. PHODUCU DISTRICT INTERESTED. " Business In the produce district during the past week has lieeu of n very unin teresting character. The market has not shown much change , values being about steady on most lines of produce , while the demand has not been very Drlsk. C mmlsslon houses , hand'.lng dairy pro ducts , nnd the wholesale grocers , are con siderably Interested In the proposed law n&alnst the manufacture of "tilled" cheese , wlilbh Is being urged ut Washington. This state , however. Is less Interested than most nny other agricultural state In the north , t'Or westfts It does not itroduco cheese In nny quantity , " nnd has never been a large consumer of "lllled" cheese. Wisconsin supplies the most of the cheese used In this state , both the genuine and spurious article. The "fl'.led" cheese sales man shows up In the springtime and usu ally brings along a car cf his goods , which ' lie will offer at about 7 cents , when good cbeeso Is selling at 10 cents. As a rule he will plhco this cheese with the retailers and after ho has fll'.eil tnem full he will offer nnvj that ho may nave lett to the , commission houses to be sold on commis- plon Ihe house receiving It to advance abDiit x C cents on It. which Is as much an the factory ever expects to get out of It. Filled cheese has never taken well In this cltl' . nnd cheese men are very bitter npalnst It on the ground that It Is ruining the ex port trade nnd setting a. Rood muny people 3n this country against cncese. and thus reducing the consumption , both at home and abroad. In the calendar year 189o the exports of cheese aggregated nearly 41- 000,000 pounds , against 03,000,000 pounds In 1891. and the value of these exports fell off nciuly 50 per cent. In the linen' yenrJ8& the oxportH of cheese aggregated 112,000.000 nouiulp. This heavy decrease In the exports is lu striking contrast with the heavy gains In'tho exports of cheese rrom Canada. In ' JS70 this country exported 47.000,000 , pounds of cheese and Canada less than 4,000000 pounds , llurlngthu fiscal year ending June SO , while the shipments of cheese from this country amounted to nearly GO.OOO.OX ) Pounds the i-hlpments from Canac.i were 146,000,000 pounds. In other word * . Canada now ex ports nearly three times us much cheese a the United States , whereas twenty-five years ago Canadian exports -were less than The Canadian law prohibits the manu facture of "tilled" chcebe. SHOUT'ON CKDAU WOOD. It Is a well Icnuvvn fact that the cedar wood from which cluur boxes Is made come hugely from Cuba , and owing to the war , It It almost Im- pouslUle to secure supplies. Ver- VOIIM anil Swvriil Prominent Opcratorx Were Active Scllcrn. CHICAGO , March 7. Wheat today completely under the control of the bears and they succeeded In hammering prices down from KO to % c. There was hardly nny sustaining Influence and the bear sen timent waa helped materially by the devel opments In the situation. Corn nnd oats vtre neglected and _ made but little change 1'ravlslons showed Irregular declines. A drop of Id In wheat futures at Liver pool and 1,151.000 bu. shipped from Argentine last week continued yesterday's weakness In wheat here when trading commenced. May , which closed yesterday ni KlJic , opened this morning- from C3V4o to C3\4c. \ The feeling developed was n little nervous anil several prominent operators were active sellers. It Bold about 11 o'clock nt C5c and a few lives sold for 1-lCc less. Clearances of wheat nnd flour from both ) coasts for the week were only 2.407,000 bu. against 2,200,000 bu. on the week before and 3,272.000 bu. on the corresponding spending week of the previous year. That alro helped the bears a little and when the ctrarances for twenty-four hours from the Atlantic seaboard were found to be very light nnd comprised only 11,78.1 bu. of wheat thn Increased weakness which caused the selling that resulted In the break to B5c was started. Another fact which demoralized the friends of wheat was the Corn Trade News report , showlnpr thnt European stocks had decreased only " 00,000 bu. during Febru ary , against 16,000,000 bu. decrease during January. This seems to show that nny hope for Improvement here or abroad based on scarcity In Europe Is hardly warranted. The result was that mnny longs who have been holding on lost courage and threw over tholr burdens. It was this thing more than the putting of short lines that gave the market HH black eye. On the extreme decline there vnt some covering by hhorts , which caused some reaction , but at no time was there much strength developed , and May closed weak at G5c bid , after having sold to from % c to C5c. Corn was. Influenced by the weakness In wheat , but trading was so extrcmelf light that little change In prices was noted. May opened a shade easier nt 30 < &c and fluctuated with a * &c range , closing easy at 30c bid. Oats showed no more activity than corn but was rather more firm , receiving fair country'support. May opened unchanged at 0c , sold to 21c nnd closed nt the opening price. In provisions but little trading was done and that for the most part at n Blight de cline. The opening was rather firm on the Improved live stoclc prices , but weakness of the grain markets soon counteracted this nnd at the close pork had declined 7'/4 and lard and ribs 2c each.
