TOJE OMAHA * DAILY BEE : SV DAY , JVLY 12. 1890. lo CONDITION OF OMAHA'S ' TRADE Mid-Summer Quiet Prevails in Most All Lines of Business. COLLECTIONS SHOW VERY LITTLE CHANGE Mitnnfnottirrrn AVIIIMrrf nml I > l cn ii MntfprH of liilrn-nl > ' - J > onp Pnc- ( r > - for SotitU Omnhn I > I IIH- rm TnlU of Clolnn. \i would 1 * idle to lee * f ° r any material Improvement In th condition of local trade at n time when th * dutfc-st * on of tbe j ( * r is ut hand and when the whole coun try la suffering from a general stagnation or Ijiivlnr--w. It may be fM that business is f i.r for the Benson , an-d all that any _ r.jtt.il > li > man could expect under ex- 1 'ing conditions , but It Is hardly pos- r ' n to go beyond that simple assertion. I'ro.-pt-cts in the country arc all that could tic dLsln-d , and If the restoration of business n-tivlty l dependent upon there being a l.-rgo harvest the outlook for future busl- r.rw is exceedingly bright. 1'rwent low prlc s and Ihe consequent scarcity of money Inrllne every on * to reduce his operations to the narrowest limits possible until the fu ure Is more plainly discernible nnd no cnnt business activity is to be expected during the summer months. Local business men are drawing some degree of comfort from the fact that the situation here Is apparently no worse than nt other points. It Is only nntural thnt every Individual should think that he Is having the hardest time possible and that the business men in some other locality are faring much better. "Distance lends enchantment" to the view thut we have of the business operations of more remote lo calities , but liirurcs tell n different story many times. The large cities to the north and to the south are frequently pointed to by Omaha citizens as showing a greater jnusure ot business prosiwrlty than their own. but the commercial reports do not Fhow it During the six months past of tht current year there was a large increase In the number of business failures , amount ing to l.OOJ for the whole country , the mid dle and western states being the greatest sufferers In that respect. On the contrary , Nebraska shows fewer failures for the six months of the current year than for tbe corresponding period of 1SC ! , the figures btlng 123 this year and 153 last year. In the matter of clearings th < - record Is also on the Bidof omnha , this city showing far larger pains for the six months than any other western city , and at a time when the rec ord for the whole country falls behind last year , and when the commercial rivals of this city are barely keeping up with last year or even falling behind. Everything v would seem to point to the fact that this / city is m Just as good condition , commer cially , as the balance of the country , "nd that there Is no reason for any business man to feel discouraged with the local out look. CLOSING DISTILLERIES. A meetingof the eastern distillers of whiskies will be held on Wednesday of this week at Coney Island for the purpose of endeavoring to secure unanimous agree ment to stop production until September 1 , 1X37 The first meeting having this object In view was held nt the Hotel Waldorf , May 27 , nnd at that time nineteen out of thirty-one eastern dlxtlllerics agreed to the proposition. Since that time the matter 4 has been more thoroughly canvassed and it is said that the next meeting gives promise of success. Inquiry of the local distillery people elicited the information that they would not be effected by an agreement of the kind proposed , as they are manufacturing for their own use , their product being held for aging and for sale at some future date , and Is not going upon the market at the present time. FACTOHT FACTS. The work on the Cudahy soap factory is progressing satisfactorily and the plant will be ready to commence operation early in the fall Lard Is selling at the lowest point on record , n fact not pleasant for the packers or for those who have hogs on feed. A meeting of the members ot the Manu facturers' and Consumers' association ol Nebraska -will be held at the rooms ol the Commercial club on Wednesday evenIng - Ing , July 22. The object Is to bring the members together for the discussion ol topics of Interest and the meeting will take the form of a. banquet. An InterestIng - Ing program has been prepared and will Include short talks by prominent manu facturers and citizens. L G. Doup will Fpcnd the next week or ten days In the cast selecting stock for his lounge factory. C * B Itlack Is spending a few days at Pierce looking- after his company's flouring mill at that point. A local manufacturer has flcrured out that about twenty cars of northern flour art sold In Omaha every month , which Is thf mt-Hns of withdrawing from the city J'.fKX every thirty days , or $ S4.MK ) every year n pretty large price , he thinks , for the people ple to pay for prejudice. Some retail sro- cers claim , however , that the reason thai so much northern flour Is sold in Omaha i ; because they are forced to carry It b ) Jobbers whom they cannot afford to offend M. A Lunn , who is giving a great deal o : attention to the beet sugar business , sayi that if the farmers would learn to grow bets that he knows of parties who woulc build a refinery In Omaha with small sugai mills out over the state , but that they wll not do anything of the kind until It li demonstrated thut the farmers can and wll crow the beets. He wants beet seed dls trlbuted all over the state to the farmer who will grow an experimental field nn < show thnt the culture can be carried 01 successfully. A local manufacturer points out tha tin-re is the possibility of developing al jnost unlimited water power at Fremon ut very little expense and that the sami could be transmitted to Omaha In the fern of electric-lty. It is said thut engineer have pronounced it practical imd that othc- ci'i-s all over the country ure moving ti nei ure cheap power by utilizing the wasti water power available In their localities 03IAI1A GiXEIt.\L MAHI-IJT. Corn and oats showed decWed Improvement and closed about ' /c higher each. Provisions advanced lIHc. Wheat showed a little more life , the con vention news being less of a disturbing element. The opening1 was steady. The government crop report shoxved n condition of 75.6 for winter wheat and S3.3 for spring wheat , which reduced the percentage aa reported In June 2.3 for winter and G.6 Jor spring and Indicated a total crop of under 445WO,000 bu. This , if anything , -was en couraging to the bulls and some advance followed. Northwest receipts were again free , as were local receipts of new wheat , and a reaction followed. Near the close the reported engagement of thirty boat loads of spring v hi-at for export gave the mar- kft an upward tone and the firmness was maintained to the close. September opened unchanged at from K sc to 5Sc. advanced to Wic , declined to uS'-c and rallied again to &Gc. where It closed. Corn was helped throughout by the bet ter feeling In wheat and tbe expectation that lake rates would be reduced , following the example of eastern rail routes. There was good buying for both country and local account. September opened unchanged at _ . ) l4c , advanced steadily and closed at 27Uc. Oats were active. Crop reports from all sections viere unfavorable. The country bought largely on that account. Shorts also bought freely nnd prices rulefl higher trom the start. September opened un changed at L'AiC and advanced to l"c , where it closed. Provisions were In better demand. The most ot the cattle here were corn fed beeves , with a very slight sprinkling lingof cow stuff and stock cattle. The market was without any Important feature , the cattle selling at about the same figures HS prevailed yesterday , steady to strong would perhaps best express the situation. Tv demand was peed and the offerings were all taken early In the day. The general run of the cattle In respect to quality was not overly good , and there was nothing choice In the yards , the best price of the day being W.Oo. Cows and heifers also sold at about steady prices , no quotable change In values taking place. The oflTlngs were all taken In good season. As hlph as S3.GO and J3.70 was paid for some corn fed steers and heifers. There were no feeders among the fresh receipts of any consequence , and the mar ket was as dull and quiet as usual on the last day of the week. Representative sales : BEEF STEERS. No. Av. Pr. No. Av.
