NEW YORK , Dec. 13.-The stock market waa irregular today during the process ol digesting large realizing sales during the current movement , the prominent railways closing at about the lowest. The market encountered efforts on the part of soldout bulls to depress values and was largely affected by the demoraliza tion In Sugar. This stock , which was early supported and gained a point , subse quently declined 5 points on reported de moralization In the Sugar trade. In the early dealings ths moderate fractional ad vance here followed the Improvement In London , where the public was buyers ol Americans. Subsequently otoeks became quite reactive , but sales , particularly it ! the standard stocks , were well taken on actual Investment and seml-lnvpytment purchases and covering of short contracts , Rallies ensued , particularly among the early suftcrsrs , and around delivery horn gains were considerable. The Atchlson Is sues recently brought to the front by prom inent Interests were sustaining factors. The vulnerability of Sugar was largely respon sible for the extreme Irregularity of the market. The traders hammered this spe cialty Industriously and uncovered round amounts of stop loss orders. Considerable support was extended to the general mar ket throughout ojid pool buying was in strumental in lifting Into prominence some of the low priced stocks which had not as yet moved in proportion to the rest of the list. This was specially true of Kaneas & Texas preferred and Wabash preferred , The current earnings of the southwestern group have begun to show gains over last year through the lifting of the cottar blockade. Missouri Pacific was the only lag gard In this category of shares , profit tak ing con plrlng to keep the price well below yesterday1 * level. The Federal Steel stocks , which had been left somewhat neglected , were taken In hand late In the day and ad vanced materially. Speculation generally betrayed a very good undertone consider ing the heavy blocks of realizing ordere whtoh came out after every rally. Lender operations were quite extensive , arbitrage dialings being- for both .accounts , but hMvlly- f v r of the bulls. Omaha took the Initiative In the final rise In prices and galnad i points. Northwest moved up sym pathetically , but the advance In the othet granger stocks was not significant. Specu lation left off heavy In tone with net changes fractionally either way. The bond market gave a better Illustra tion of strength than the stock list and , al though realizing orders were in force Ir the speculative Issues , final prices record substantial gains In many classes. Total sale , $8,710,000. United States 3s , the old coupon , and the 2s , registered , advanced 1-i per cent In the bid uric * . Ths Commercial Advertiser's Lender financial cablegram says : The new account here was opened well amid general firm ness. But the only buoyant market was the Americans. In them the largest busi ness for months was done. There wa a free exchange of shares , the bears closing out and fresh buying and profit taking marking tie dealings. The public Is dis tinctly joining in the transactions. The chief favorite Is Atchlson prrftrrod. The general continuation rate was 4 % to 5 pei oent ; St. Paul , 3 to 4 per cent. Louisville & Nashville and Atchlson were rather scarce. Ten thousand pounds sterling in gold wtre taken for Lima. The following are the closing quotation ! of the leading stocks on tha New York market today : Atchleon UK St. L. & B. Ex-Senator Kvarts has entirely disap peared from the public eye and , according to tha fickleness of mankind , i * almoit for gotten. You never sea his name In th newspapers , eays the New York Press , and seldom hear him epoken of theie days , al though twonty-flvo year * ago he was on * ol the moat conspicuous man of the nation. Ho still lives In a larno old-fashioned rod brick house with green blinds , in Stuyvosant square , In the old part of New York. Mr. Evarts Is now 81 years old and totally blind. He alts all day in a reclining chair in a sunny room In the econd story of his resi dence , where a young lady secretary attends C to his correspondence and reads to him thi newspapers , magazines and novels. He re tains full pomession of his faculties and con tinues to enjoy Hi * , for several old cronies call upon him every day and some of hit numeroub grandchildren are almost olwayi around his chair. The neighbors say that when they sco a whlte-apronoJ nurse and a baby carriage- they know It belong ! to tht Evarts family. No pleasant day pastes without a visit from all the grandchildren and the old gen tleman watches eagerly for their coming , Some of them he has never seen. The light began to leave Mr. Evarts * eyes about tei years ago , afttr an accident , when be wat thrown from a ar and. st * k bit forehead upon tfc * pavement. The doctors say th shock burst tbo blood venels of his eyc and caused a film to spread over the retlnl which could never be removed. Ho has re ceived treatment from the best apeclaltsti In Europe and America and Dr. Delafleld , a celebrated oculist of New York , calls upoi him at least once a week , but gives him no hope of recovery. Otherwise' his health is as vigorous as one oould expect In a man of his age. Ho has taken no active part in affairs since he left the senate , although he still retains a nominal connection with his old firm , Evarts , Choate & Beaman , tha junior partner being one of his seven sona ta-lay. Two of bis SODS and several other members of the family are employed with the flrm. Notwithstanding his eventful career ol nearly sixty years at the bar , In politics and public office. Mr. Evarts has resisted all persuasion to write the reminiscences ot his busy and eventful life. STEVE CRANK'S WHEEL. An Alleged Snmmarr of HU Literal- * Hcndcenr. When a poet sings of himself he ts in tensely Interesting ; when ho gives the pub lic a rythmlcal invoice of his headgear hi becomes fascinating. So declares the Chicago cage News. Stephen Crane has lain ban the Innermost recesses of his Intellectual machinery in a poem , from which we ruth lessly pluck this bit : Humbllntr , buxzlnp , turning , whirling wheels , Dizzy wheels ! Wheels ! Thus equipped , Mr. Crane's ability ti transfix the world by a motion ot his pen It \ explained. It is perhaps fate to say that all nun have wheels , but they , or most of them myway , have them under control. It li loubtful , however , If manyt have wheels .hat perform as described by Mr. Crane. IVe have read ot men whose wheels rumbled ind turned , but there la no other record > f their buztlng and whirling until they ire dizzy. From his Invoice wo judge Mr. Crane'i itock U full. After scheduling the several < lnds of wheels he adds some more wheels , is It to make sure that tbo entire contents > t his wheel housa Is comprehended.
