LAND SAID TO BE BOUGHT BY OIL KINQ Tract oat Which Petroleaas is Pa Reported to Have Fallea lata the Teataeles of Rockefeller. Is Omaha In an oil belt and It It possible that the Illuminating and heating problems of this section may be revolutionised be fore long? This question Is being seriously asked, for It Is believed oil has been discovered about four miles south of Council Bluffs and near the river. An uncouth Individual with a bottle of murky liquid called on City Chemist Klrschbrsun Thursday morn ing and asked to have the contents of th bottle tested. The stranger Was exceedingly reticent about his errand and wished his business with the chemist to be aa quiet as possible. Chemist Klrschbrsun found th bottle contained crude petroleum oil of ordinary quality, snd so advised the stranger, who appeared nervous and elated. Th man would not give his name, but after much cajoling aald the oil seeped Into a cellar he was digging not far from th river and about four miles from Council Bluffs and nearly a mile from a limestone hill. The stranger's left srm was crippled and h had the appearance of an ordinary laborer. He said he Would now get an option on th property where ha found th oil. That Rockefeller Deal. In view of a recent land deal In the sec tion referred to by this man his discovery Is doubly Interesting. It has been reported that a syndicate in which John D. Rocke feller was Interested had bought a large tract of land near Omaha on th Iowa side of the liver. In the bluffs along the Burlington tracks v between Omaha and Bellevue may be seen small, deserted coal mine which was worked years ago, but abandoned on ao oount of tM poor quality of th coal found. The Nebraska geological report shows that there Is a geological strip ex tending from Kansas through southeastern Nebraska and up through this territory. City Chemist Klrachbraun said he has found in Platte river sand used In Omaha chunks of ooal that showed a water action of years. Coal was struck last year at Peru, which Is near tha river. Chemist Klrschbrsun does not believe that oil In any quantity would be found where th sample he examined was dis covered, but does hold that the presence of oil seeping through the earth in the manner referred to Is a reasonable Indica tion that there may be flows under the Iowa bluffs. FISHBACK WANTS CALDWELL play Coanty Rtatesrnaa Asks Governor to Appolat Friend State Oil Inspector. "I wish, and I believe the Bell company wishes now, that my bill for telephone connections at city limits had not been defeated In the legislature of 1905." said former Representative Fish back of Clay county, who cam to Omaha with a load of cattle Thursday. "I thought then, and I think now, . this measure would have been fair to the Bell people, as well as our little country companies. Furthermore, I am sure It would have saved you people In Omaha from a dual system,.,. If that measure had passed I think Omaha would not have had two companies doing busi ness here. T am glad to see the legislature enacting some of the reform legislation It hss. My friend, Caldwell, and I were called radi cals in th "esslons of 1U03 and 1906, and yet w were not as radical as th results of ' this session Indicate these men are. 'I have been to Lincoln and conveyed to Governor Bheldon th wishes of our people for the appointment of Mr. Caldwell as state oil Inspector. I hope ha will see fit to make the appointment. Caldwell la of the Bheldon reform forces and the gov ernor could do no better than nam hint for th place. "I am gratified to see the terminal taxa tion law enacted. I opposed that bill la two sessions, but I view It from a different standpoint now." MISSOURI MAN ENDS LIFE Myer Wilson ot Kansas City Shoot Illsaself on Street Thar day Morning;.
