Calabash Pipes Are J Made Here by Tracy Brothers' Company Tracy Brothers company, the well known tobacconists, arc about to add to the list of Nebraska enterprises, one ex ceptionally unique In character. Tills new Industry Is to be the making of calabash pipes. Tho calabash Is a peculiar kind of gourd, growing origi nally in South Africa only. H was never known to have any particular value until during the Doer war a Hrltsh soldier, whose pipe, brought with him from Liv erpool, was shot from hs mouth by a Doer sharpshooter, who had Intended his bullet for the head of the soldier. When the soldier had recovered from his fright and excitement, he felt the need of a good smoke, but had no pipe, and In looking abot for a substitute he picked up a calabash growing on the Silage Success in State It Is advisable to feed silage to cows where the milk Is used for condenserles nnd no ill results are obtained from tho use of good silage. Where silage is de cayed, mouldy or fermented and fed a few hours before milking tho milk sometimes tainted. This Is especially true In the case of cows whose condition Is not exactly normal. If a cow Is fever ish from any cause, la In heat, or her dlgcsjlon is abnormal, her milk will be more readily tainted from the food catei. The blood tends to throw off the Im purities f the body and readily becomes affected when an abnormal condition oc curs. The blood supplying the udder hua carries some of the taint from these Im purities Into the udder, although the Im purities' themselves are filtered out. Tho extent of the taint depends upon the na ture of the substance producing It, and upon the rondltlqn of the cow. This pipe was so graceful In appearanco and took on such a beautiful color that his comrades soon began hunting calabashes for their use and the style was carried back to Kng land and was not long in going round tho world. Mr. Tracy, as he saw tho uso of the calabash growing popular, sent for some seed nnd had u farmer friend experiment, with Its growth in Nebraska. It was found that the calabash grew moio beautifully and luxuriously In Nebraska's fertile soil than on the veldts of South Africa, and after two years of success ful experience ho has now accumulated such a quantity of calabash gourds that he has a sufficient supply for a good nixed calabash factory in Omaha. There fore it will not be long until any on wanting a "Grown In Nebraska" as well as a "Made In Nebraska" calabash, need only to apply to Tracy Brothers com pany, who are already turning out cala bash pipes made In their own plant. (wild onions), for Instance Is very pen etrating and where u cow's condition Is weak and nonreslstant the extent of tho penetration la greatest. The Borden Condensed Milk company for a time prohibited the use o( silage. Not because It considered tho uso of good silage detrimental, but because oi Its Indiscriminate use by many unin formed, unscrupulous feeders. As dairymen become more educated III tho method of storing and fcedfng of slllagn packing It well ntound the edges while filling and feeding about two inches off tho top, keeping the surface level, tho Borden company rellnqucshed Its restriction on the feeding of silage to cows from which its milk wbb ob--talned. Good silage, Judiciously fed to healthy cows, never Imparted an unpleasant flavor to milk. Purchasing Established 1874 ASSOCIATION, KKK- ' I .4) Paris Styles Here Three Days After They First Appear It Is quite possible to show Purls styles on the streets of Omuhn, within three days nfter they mako their nppoaranco In tho French stylo-center. This fact Is vouched for by represen tatives of M. K. Smith fc Co.', of Omaha, whose ladles' ready-to-wear garment fac tory Is probably the largest In this part of tho country. t The explanation of this seeming mliaclu Is very simple. Hero It Is: When a very rndlcal stylo change oc curs abroad, a complete description Is cabled to tho United .States by represen tatives of the large Amorlcan manufac turers. This cable Is ho complete In details, that an expert designer can usually draft a pattern from It, without difficulty. Na turally, ho does not follow tho l'arls Idea exactly, becauso Americans do not take kindly to the extremes of thu Krcnch city. As soon as his pattern Is finished, this designer nuns it over to the head cutter, and within an hour or so, tho rfarment Is ready to go to tho operating room u( the factory. From that time on, only a day nt the most Is necessary to complete tho gar ment; nnd thus nn Amerlcunlzed version oi the l'arls Idea can be shown mi Far mm street the same week it makes its appearanco abroad. It may be added, Uowuvcr, that this Is very seldom done. Written descriptions, accompanied by sketches, usually come rapidly enough by steamer to servo all purposes. The uso of tho cable, ns above men tioned, has occurred, however, when espe cially revolutionary changes huvc oc curred. ft SHOP CO.
