Where there were a few bulls a week ago, there were only a few bears at the close of the session last hlght Advances were made In wheat of 4c yesterday and the-tenor was one of strength, There were many conditions surrounding th market that could bo called helpful to those who believe that wheat has suf fered more of a decline than it should. One of the prominent bullish helps to ?n? Iprward was a cablegram from Hull. England, to Frank Holloway. the prominent wheat man on this market, which said that the Indian wheat crop is a failure. This piece of news was tin looked for, although advices from Liver pool for some weeks have told ct de terioration of the Indian crop and ot heavy losses In that country. Wheat will be harvested In India next April, accord ing to Mr. Hollaway's report, and there is a possibility ot another crop beinsr raised between now and then. It only takes 120 days to grow our spring wheat crop and, as the Indian crop is winter wheat, it should be gTown in time for 2rvestlng next spring. Farmers have doubtless made up their minds to hold their surplus wheat unless better prices are forthcoming for it. Receipts in the northwest and at primary points are falling off. Nearly every cash handler in the Omaha market and somo of them with very little wheat on hand, were talking quite bulUshly yesterday follow, ing the long drawn out recessions suf fered. They advance the opinion that Minneapolis and Duluth wheat is certain to advance In price and sell at a good premium over the Chicago wheat. Cash wheat hi Un A no time during yesterday was the I """t. -uru wmk ana prices were c better for the day. Those who are short that cereal, as well as some of those who are long, endeavored to depress values, the former desiring to cover their short contracts and the latter to secure low price corn If possible. Advices from other selling points were lather discouraging, Indicating liberal receipts at some, points and lover markets, with others reporting moderate reoslpU, but with the market still weak and unsatis factory. For that reason the trade at this point, waa very backward In open ing and It was late before any business of consequence had been transacted. Buyers were very much Inclined to wait until they heard later news from other points before ruling orders. Another 13 feeders.. 1307 7 8S Charles Heath. Nebraska, i feeders.. 920 6 90 . This Is about the same as a week ago, but Is nearly 1,000 head short of last year. Packers were very bearish again this morning, and the first bide they made were lOfflta lower than yesterday's av erage. Shippers bought several loads early at about the same decline, paying; a top of 37.80, Their purchases were com purttlvely light, however, and the big bulk of the hogs remained at the dls posal of the packers. Bellers repeated yesterdays performance, of holding back for a while, but the market showed signs ot weakening rather than getting stronger, and It was not long before they began to cut loose at the decline named. Bulk ot the sales landed at 37.65 7.70. Trado waa very slow and draggy all the war through, and It was late be. fore anything like a olearanoe was made. The extrome close waa the slowest time of tho market, and It looked for a time an though values would bo a little weaker, but when the last sales were made prices looked to bo about steady with the general decline. NEW YORK ST0CK MARKET Outburst of Strength Street Has Not Seen for Weeks. BIG GAINS IN LEADING SHARES Adrance from Two to Four Polnlr with Inrrenses of as Mnch as Riant Points In Some Cases. Oct a. stock Not for weeks torn had NEW YORK, buoyantly today, me street seen such an outburst of strength. Leading shares gained from two to four points with advances ot as much as eight points In some cases. The amount of business In tho first hour's trading was nearly as great as the total of yesterday's session. It was r bad day for the bears. The advance was achieved largely at their oxpenso, for short covering" was respon sible for tho heaviest buying especially In steel and Union Pacific. The sharp rise In American stocks in London gave the market Its first Impulse upward and created alarm among the nhorts. The upward movement was ac celerated by news from Washington that the Interstate Commerce commlsnlon had approved an Increase In certain freight rates in the Missouri river district Traders made ot this decision a market factor ot first Importance. Although the decision affected only a comparatively small amount of the railroad's business tho Interpretation of the street waa that a mom liberal policy on the port of the commission was indicated. Further reports from Washington thnt Important amendments would be made in tho currency bill affecting provisions which have met with hardest opposition nlso helped to stimulate the market, in creased speculative activity waa facili tated by conditions in the money market Although there was no further essential chango In time rates, the tone waa naslor, reflecting tho Improved position of the banks tut shown In the last statement and offerings of money her by foreign lendern during the last two days. Bonds showed general strength with a good Inquiry for some low priced issues. Total sates par value 83,080,000.
