'J UK BEti: OMAHA, WEDNESDAY, -JANl'AUY 7, 1914. 11 GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKET Wheat Longs Are Disgusted with the Demands. MIJCH CORN IS IMPORTED Ihlprapnti Tntnllna 708,000 Ilwst. cls Are ItcrelTed nt GnlTCston from Sonth Amerlcn Alnrkct Gnsstp. OMAHA. Jan. 6. 191l. The longs In wheat have become greatly disgusted because of tho lack of demand for tho cash article, tho transactions hero yesterday amounting tq only Z&.O00 bush els, which tho head of nny average com mission house would be ashamed to acknowledge. Prices were a shade better early In tho session. May advancing lie nd the Julv tr. hut the earlv strength nave way to weakness, and this, too, In me race of some rather good buying on anil on during the day. Tho Dartlett-I-ratler house led In the buying, but as toon as those brokers were filled up and the buying power decreased, there was i but one sldo to tho situation, and that was the bear side. Ono fact was notice able, and that was that more long wheat came out yesterday than has been seen iny one day In the last fortnight. The bulls seemed to be searching tl6 winter wheat belt for news that would be likely to steady the general situation, and after delving down Into the Lone Star state they drew a prlto In the shape of p. green bug story, but this was fol lowed by a denial, as well as the opinion from ono of the leading grain concerns in Texas, that wheat Is looking excellent and that stock has been pastured on It for some time In order to prevent It from growing too rapidly. It was expected by at least one of tho big private wire concerns that the heavy rains In Argentina during the last few days, and which have restricted thresh ing and movement of wheat, would provo a' bullish Influence and on this consider able of the May future was bought. At least two of the leading commission houses received cables telling of tho probable losses by heavy rains, but neither of them advanced an opinion as to. the amount of damage. Iluenos Ayrcs reported a good foreign demand there, with wheat 54o higher. The bears In wheat were somewhat dis appointed because of the lncreaso of only 270,000 bit. In the visible supply for the week, although soma of tho bulls were figuring on a decrease. The receipt pt 708,000 bushels of Argen tine corn at Galveston yesterday was loqked upon by the trade as a bearish factor. The market at Chicago was heavy, as there was additional liquida tion by longs and there was an absence pf. new buying power. Country advices Indicate shipments of a liberal quantity of corn, but In poor condition and some ay that tho country shippers fear the corn will decay in the crib. The most unhealthy factor In the corn market at the ttiom, ent is the big discount for Janu ary under May, which Indicates very slack demand and the Bales here yesterday amounted to only 100,00 bu. The further lncreaso in the Visible supply of oats was the strongest factor favorable to the bears. Jan. 6.-Cheap offers of shipments from the Danube, as well as from Argentina, brought about a down ward swing today In corn. The market closed heavy, io to l114o under last night, 'Wheat finished 4,14o net lower, oats down Mc to TiS'lc and provisions un changed to 714c off. Prices at which both Danublan and Argentina corn wero offered In ship loads to be delivered In Atlantic ports or the United States seemed to many Bpeculators her to Indicate probable large kales by Argentina to this country, what ever the result might be in regard to tho offers from Europe. Bears ignored dis patches from Texas that experience there with the Argentine grain had been un satisfactory and that Texas buyers weie iiow looking to St. Louis for a supply. .Lack of any adequate demand for cash corn here had considerable to do with the rapidity with which the price of fu tures gayo way. Except that covering by shorts at the outset furnished Im petus for a temporary swell, the market throughout suffered from unloading by holders and from speculative selling. Chances that free Imports from Canada would soon be a reality put the wheat bulls at a disadvantage. Millers and In vestors appeared to be more and more reluctant to buy. There was a show of strrngth early, based in part on higher cables and partly on the smallnesa of re ceipts northwest of here, but the market soon wavered, especially after corn be gan to sag. Values displayed no sign ot any power to rally. Pressure from Canadian receipts here wag n the main responsible for oats tak Irig a slump. For a whila pit traders at tempted to cling to the bull side, but finally were forced to let go. Grain longs selling out weakened pro visions, Declining prices for hoga tended also to drag down the market. Articlel Open. I Illgh.l Low. Close.jYes'y. Whcatl May July. Corn May. July. Oats I May. Fling Gives First One of Series of Six Leofcures Dr. F, M. Fling, head oC tha depart ment of European history at the Uni versity of Nebraska, gave tho first of a series of six lectures on European states men at the high school auditorium yes terday afternoon. Dr, Fling chooso ns Ills subject for the first lecture "Turgot, tha Reformer," who was a brilliant statesman of France during tho eight eenth century. Dr. Fling gave o synopsis ot the Ufa of Turgot nnd tits works. He told how the statesman had abandoned his efforts In tho ecclesiastical field to study Juris prudence and political economy and how he contributed to tho uplifting ot France by his Judicious financial measure dur ing his terms In high public positions, Dr. Fling spoke of Turcot as a man ot Infinite power and brilliance. In lllu tratlng his point he spoke of Turgot's unparalleled maneuvers tn obtaining money with which to run tho government ot France without adding to the op prcsslve taxation. Dr. Fling characterised Turgot as one of the six most brilliant statesmen ot Europe and ono of tho greatest ministers France ever had. He said men of Tur got's caliber were Indispensable to the shaky governments of those days, and without Turgot and others of equal worth countries ot Europe would stilt be suf fering from the effects of weak rulers of the earlier centuries. ....1130 ....1710 ....1610 ....1193 ....1439 .... no 117 I 38 ,761 6 60 ,711 I 60 ,707 I CO 697 6 76 610 6 ID 679 6 84 I. 16., 23.. 4.. 29.. 19,. 33, 317 I II 749 I 60 663 7 00 640 7 00 166 7 20 Ill 7 35 16 710 IIOGS-SutiDllos wero liberal this morn ing, tha estimate calling for 215 cars or 15,500 head. For the two days the total Is 22,3m:, a gain ot more than 4,000 head over last week, and nearly T.0C0 larger than for the corresponding days lust vear. In spite of the large run, and discour aging advices from other points, ship pers and some of the packers were out early, buying host hogs at prices that wero fully steady. Later on tho rest ot the buyers came out and tried to start a bear movement by making their first bids at sharply lower figures, but sales men refused to listen to any reduction on tho early prices, and In the end the bulk of the offerings moved at prices that were rather uneven, but generally steady. Teiere was little demand for any grade of hoes welehltig under 150 or 165 pounds. and prices on thut sort of stuff wore con giuently weaker, sellers claiming that In some cases the decline amounted to as much as WJlOc. Most of the hogs were of fair to eood ouftlltv. however, and ns the proportion of light stuff In the sup ply whs comparatively small, the big bulk, of the sales was made ul steady prices. Towards the close the demand picked up a little and the market wound up at slightly strengthened prices. Hulk of the sales landed at J7.75?8.0(', and tops again sold at JS.10. For tha two days values show an advance of JIJIOc, and today's prices are around 30c above those paid on last Wednesday, tho lust day of the preceding year. Representative sules; No, fib. Ar. Pr.
