PATHETIC TRIBUTES MARK LINE OF RETREAT OF RUSSIAN SOLDIERS Rude Verses In Memory of Fallen "Soldiers, Written By Comrades Epitaphs Breathe Vengeance and Hope of Victory While Some Express Affection STEERING CROWDS FROM OFFICE OF MAYOR OF GREATER NEW YORK Ability of William Kennel To Get Rid of Suspicious L,i- ing Individuals Mas Uone ar lo Protect Lives f Executives of Metropolis In the wake of the Czar's retreating legions there fol?ow a number ot' Ioets. who inscribe crosses on rocks, trunks of trees, or fence posts of ruin ed homes, little tributes to the dead, according to an article in the New York paper. Unadorned by any fine styte or metaphor, this untutored muse visits the trench or battlefield, expressing the simple emotion with whichc the Russian soldier in a few lines of an epitaph, often washed away by the rrext day's rain, seeks to 'perpetuate the memory of a fallen comrade.- These writings appear to one search ing for curious mementoes of the bat tlefield in nooks and corners of a roadside, along forest edges, or wherever a favorite comrade may have been buried. And they are buried in the strangest spots, for war makes beggars even of the dead, and they cannot choose their resting places. Sometimes, when the exigen cies of battle require haste, the slain are heaped into huge ditches, and over the mound is erected a rude birchwood cross, with a single line, such as "Here lie men who died for the Czar," and nothing more. But, for the most part, the Rus slans try not to neglect their dead. Sometimes, with the hope that hu man hand may return to care for the graves, they bury them near a peasant's hovel, now desolate and shattered by cannon, or on the banks journeyed all the way from a flower of some quiet stneam, where the dead less land to die on Polish soil, are as may listen to the perpetual solace or follows: murmuring waters. Or they range a Over the grave of a soldier, who spent many a homesick night in the trenches and whose longing for wife and child was finally ended by a bullet through the heart, is written: They need no longer expect you, dear comrade, Yet, in your sleep of death be not so sad. The Czar "will guard all whom you cherished Your wife, your child. We, too, shall watch them In memory of you who perished. But bitterness and hatred find ex pression in a bit of verse written over the grave of an officer who was killed in a hard-fought battle which result ed in defeat for the Russians: Gathered about thee after the heat of battle, We offer eternal tribute to thy memory: And, standing upon the graves of brothers, Vengeance we swear upon our enemy, Thn let us rush once more into the conflict with all our might: And either as conquerors we return or we perish all in the fight. Four lines written on the bark of a tree around which were buried some officers of a Siberian regiment, who William Kennel, the mayor's guard, celebrated two anniversaries this year. On August 3 "Husky Bill" noted the twenty-fifth anniversary of his ap pointment to the police force, while on February 28 he celebrated the twentieth annivarsary as official guar dian of the mayor of New York. Since his appointment he has guarded seven mayors Strong, Van Wyck, Low, Mc Clellan (two terms), Gaynor, Kline and Mitchel. He also has served many acting mayors, including Charles V. Fornes, Little Tim Sullivan and Patrick H- McGowan. Although brought up to be a butch er. Kennel preferred to be a police man and was appointed August 3, 1890. After patrolling the East Side for four years, Supt. Byrnes took him into the detective bureau, whence he was transferred to the mayor's office in 1895. He was made a sergeant in 1897, and when the grade was changed in 1907, he became a lieutenant. Ac cording to the rules of the department Kennel could have retired on a pen sion five years ago, but he is so spry that he would rather earn his salary - In the time that Kennel has been stationed outside the mayor's office he has met cranks of all varieties and celebrities from many lands. In this respect Kennel's linguistic ability has served him in good stead, for the white haired lieutenant speaks Ger man, Yiddish, Italian and knows a lit tle of French. His farewell tribute will be contained in a few lines of verse writ ten on a cross, on the white bark of a tree, on a stone, or on anything near the grave that will carry the tracings of a pencil. Some of them ring with hope in ul timate victory and proclaim in naive bombastic terms the almighty power of the Czar to vanquish the enemy.
