Pierre Capital, 13: The trouble com menced on Tuesday night when Fielder, failing to extort from his Indian wife all ber pony money which had been paid her by Agent Lillibridge, by peacable means, beat her into insensibility and almost to death. The news reached the authorities at the agency the next morning and Chief of Police Fletcher in oompany with two Indian police went to see Fielder and to take him before the police court, visiting him twice, but all persuasions and arguments had no effect. Several hours were allowed to elapse be fore any further action was taken, dur ing which time it is asserted, he openly defied the authorities, announcing that there wasn't enough policemen on the reservation to arrest him. During the forenoon he came over the river, he seemed agitated and exoitedly he hurried away. About 4 p. m. Capt. Straight-Head was given a warrant for the arrest of Fielder, and with six addi tional policemen proceeded to his house, but foand the door locked. On being re fused admission and to come out and be peacably arrested, Capt. Straight-Head land his company proceeded to breuk in the door. This hadn't more than been done, when Fielder rushed out with an axe upraised and made for Capt Straight- Head, who consequently had no alterna tive but to shoot. Immediately a fosil ade commenced and in less time than it takes to tell it all that was left of Wm. Fielder was stretched out on the ground with eight bullets in his body. Everything about R. The purpose of this im portation of seed is as set forth in Mr. Rusk's last report as secretary of agri culture, to undertake, with the co-op eration of the experiment stations in the cotton states, experiments with a view to producing a cotton of home growth which may serve as an efficient substitute for the Egyptian, of which during the last fiscal year more than Three Million Dollars Worth was imported into this country, an in crease of 15 per cent over the previous year, and of considerably more than 100 per cent over the year ending in 1890. The cotton seed received at the depart ment consists of two of the best known Egyptian varieties, the "afifi" and the "pamiah." The distribution will be made to the experiment stations in the cotton states, and also through the senators from those states to planters whom thay may recommend as persons well qualified and willing to give the Egyptianfceed a careful trial. They are good as the gold in the hands of the owners." Bringing forth the county's bljf pocketbook, Mr. Runkel enumer ated the following list of warrants, rang ing in date from 1881 to 1891, and signed, respectively, by the chairmen ^f county commissioners from the balmy days of L. SINGLE TAX UNCONSTITUTIONAL!. The Maryland Courts Render sa Im portant Decision. BALTIMORE, March 10.—The anti single tax men have won. The court of appeals of Maryland has decided that a tax upon land alone for the support of the government of this state or any part of it, or the government of any county or municipality is not in accordance with the provisions of our present con stitution and cannot, therefore, be enforced. This decision grows out of the single tax system enforced upon the Citizens of Hyattsville, in Prince George tounty. Alt Kqualljr Protected. The opinion handed down at Annap olis says: "As those who own build ings, improvements and personal prop erty in any of the various forms, as well as intangible and tangible, are equally protected in their jKjssessiona and in their national rights by the state and local governments with those who own land, the support of these govern ments should place no heavier charge upon one than upon the other class of individuals. This has been tlie uniform and consistent policy always followed in Maryland. Eminently just in itself, a sound and long accepted axiom of political economy, has been incorporated in her organic law since Nov. b, 1874. This decision ends the attempt to try the single tax iu Maryland. Dismissed Sixty. WASHINGTON.
