While the state canvassing board has
decided to wait until December 17th to
secure the certified returns from Law
rence, Butte and the unorganized coun
ties annexed thereto, which would give
the silver electors and congressmen safe
majorities and the election, there is lit
t)e doubt, as intimated in our editorials
heretofore, that the republicans intend
to steal the election on the strength of
the resolution passed by the canvassing
board last week which leaves out these
counties in making up the total vote on
the aforesaid
offices. Congressman I
Gamble in an interview with a Mitchell
Republioaa reporter, as tbe former re
turned from Pierre after the above ao
tion had ben taken by the board, said
that the republican congressmen and
electors had been elected, which lends
color to the report of the intended steal,
and since his return home, the Yankton
Times of the Oth inst says:
has received a majority of the votes and
as a consequence the certiticates of elec
tion will have to be issued. The Times
congratulate people of Yankton that
one of their townsman is to ropreseut the
state in the halls of congress.

amendmen*. to the constitution shall be
printed on each ticket on the ballots,
etc." The amendments were all printed
on a separate ticket by tliemselvee and
did not appear on each ticket on the

would invalidate all of them. The
question will undoubtedly be tested and
means more work for the courts.

The unoflicial figures published several
days ago upon the vote for Btate officers
and railroad commissioners contained ao
I error which should be corrected. The
vote of W. T. LaFollette for railroad
commissioner was given as 40,!14'J when
it should have been 11,312, his majority,
over Johnson, the highest man on the
republican ticket, being 305. The vole,
cast tor railroad commissioners were as
follows: Johnson, 40,047 LaFollette,
41.342 Bromley, 40,0^2 Kirkpatrick,
41,343 McFadden, 40.80C Thomkiue,
41,320.
The report of State Auditor Hippie for
the tiscal year ending June 30, 1890, is
on our table and a most excellent state
compilation it is, the best ever issued
taxes, financial conditions of counties,
etc., never heretofore given in any of
ficial reports, and covering years far
back iuto the history of the territory and
which have taken much labor, research
and correspondence through private par
ties and libraries to compile. TUey will
constitute an invaluable historical' refer
ence for the future. In addition to
these, Auditor Hippie makes many use
ful, economical and practical^ sngges
tionson our assessment and revenue
laws that would be well for our legisla
tors to heed and profit by in .their fu
ture work, and he also lays bare the
whole fabric of our state tinances. We
shall have ocoasiou to quote from these
from time to time. The people of the
state owe Auditor Hippie a debt of grut
