CHICAGO, Aug. 7.—Five lives were lost and scores of people injured in an explosion which took place daring a fire in the Northwestern grain elevatoi at Cook and West Water streets. Four of the dead are firemen and the body of another fireman is thought to be buried iu the ruins of the elevator. Of the injured 51 were firemen. Besides these dozens of passersby were more or less cut and bruised by glass and flying debris. It was the bursting of a boiler or the explosion of mill dust that caused the awful havoc. The dead are Jacob J. Schnur, John J. Soogan, John Strukniau and Jacob Strainer, all fireman, and an unknown man. Of the injured several are expected to die. Explosion XVas Terrific. The origin of the blaze is believed to have been in the vicinity of the boiler house. Just as? the firemen were get ting into position for advantageous work and nearly all the members of Engine Company No. 3 were mounting the ladders and bringing lines of hose to play on the interior from the upper windows there came a roar that could be heard for half a mile and the roof was torn into many fragments and the walls came down with a crash. The force of the explosion was so great that the eastern wall tumbled down upon the unfortunate men below aud the fragments of the roof were distributed for blocks around. Many Ktruek If Ftgrteg OaMfc Every window in the vicinity of the elevator was shattered by the concus sion, dozens of persons were struck by flying debris and several small fires re sulted from falling timbers that were still in flames. At Jefferson street and Carroll avenue, many blocks distant, great burning masses of wreckage fell upon four wagons loaded with hay and set them in flames. The explosion stunned for a moment the police and firemen, but they quickly rallied to help those who had been hurt. Dozens of men lay injured in the withering heat, some not seriously harmed and others in the throes of death. It was danger ous work to get theia out, but it was valiantly and quickly done and all of the slightly injured were removed. The dead were, for the time, left where they lay. The total loss is estimated at $8U0, 000, which i* fomd to be incorrect. Airs. Joutt 11. DAVENPORT, la., Aug. 7.—No Daven port factories have yet shut down for want of coal, but they are beginning to contract for supplies of sawdust, slabs, rattlings aud saw mill refuse, to be be forehand if the Iowa miners should strike. About all the coal being used here comes from the Iowa mines, and a shortage would be inevitable if they shut down for any length of time. Nearly all the steamers plying the Mississippi at present are burning wood and there has been a scurry of dealers to the hard wood districts along the river to con tract tor the cord wood that is available there. The Diamond Jo boats seem to be getting coal in places, although they are understood to be using some wood also. The Coal Valley Mining company is reserving all its coal on hand for the Rock Island waterworks and sources of supply are gradually lessening. BOMBAY DEATH RATE. This total death rate is equal to 65.61 per thousand, or double the normal rate. BACKACHE makes the young feel old, and the old feel that life is not worth the living. Any person cured of Kidney weakness will tell you that when the back ceased to ache, all troubles ended. Neither liniments, nor plasters, nor electricity can cure it.
