The financial statement ot the Madi son State Bank required by law whioh appears in this issue of The Uaii.y Li m»:k is very Mattering to that at all times stable institution. It shows sn increase of nearly *10,000 iu business in the short period since its last report and the amount of deposits almost equals its loans and discounts. It would be diffi cult to tind in the state a bank state* ment showing a more favorable con dition of its financial standing, aud the banking people ot Madison evidently appreciate this fact and manifest their confidence by their increase of patron sge. The statement is worthy a careful perusal. Go to the Hospital for soft-water baths. 25 oenta. Mhs. Calukan. Llreasea Mill Pester. AICofiee At, in the Liquor Busi ness? Attorney Kittredge and Mayor Daniels Get To* gether--What'll You Have? The bearing of the three liquor oases yesterday brought to this city A. B. Kittredge, Esq., attorney of the brewers of Sioux Palls, to defend the accused. The defendants avoided trial and gave bonds, the object being to await the de cision of the supreme court in a eimilar cas«carried up from another county. In a conversation with Mayor Daniels, Mr. Kittredge pointed oat the futility of such prosecutions, as the brewing com panies have taken counsel with the be«t lawyers both in Dakota and in the east and all are agreed that there is no law in South Dukota governing the liquor tratlic. Mr. Kittredge suggests to the mayor of tint and all other cities that they put in effect the old license law of last )ear and thus control the traffic, receive revenue therefrom and at the same time afford protection to the city and to the liquor men. The latto pre fer to run under the old plan and are ready to pay their liceuse a year in ad vance and link no rebute if at. the end of six months the supreme court decision should be received and it be against them, but which they are thoroughly satietied will uot be. Mayor Daniels is inclined to think that Mr. Kittredge's suggestion is about the best thing to follow, looking at the situation from a business and legal stanJioint, but if the friends of temperance desire that he shall go on and tight the open saloon he is prepared to do that, lie will call a meeting in a few days to determine the wishes of the fiiends ot good government in the matter, md be governed by their desire.
