A choir of t»00 men aud girls chanted psalms. The former president aud his suite then re paired to the royal waiting room, where the burgomaster warmly welcomed them in a brief speech. Then followed Dr. Spiuk, the president of the local South African association, in an ad dress asuriug Mr. Kruger of deep t-ympathy of the entire Dutch nation "who had," he said, "so greatly though vainly hoped that the great powers who had recently assembled at the peace conference would not have per mitted that in South Africa the right of war aud civil law should be tram pled under foot or a little nation be sacrificed an unequal combat in de fense of its existence."
