President Roosevelt is quoted as gv ing ont an estimate of the presidential situation. The president proved him self a good guesser at the time of the national republican convention at which time ho estimated Taft's strength at 700 delegates. The vote in the convention gave Taft 702 votes The president in his late estimate gives Taft 806 of the 4*:{ electoral votes. Seuator Dolliver of Iowa is cam paigning in California. In bis address at Los Angeles the senator said the paramount issue of this campaign was nor the tariff, or the guarantee of bank deposits, or WBT, or peace, or di plomacy, bat "the preservation and perpetuation of those ideals of private honesty and public integrity which had made the administration of Roosevelt famous.'' Gov. Hughes of New York is given thf credit for swinging Indiana and Nebraska into line for the republicans. HOWH S This? Attorney General (-lark WHS called upon foi an opinion as to thR aud held that while each should le looked upon as an independent enndi date he did not think it necessary for each individual candidate to present a petition for himself, but that'all could come in as a collective petition under one motio as independent candidates. The question was then raised as to the question ofgiving these lists a posi tion in a column to itself with a circle over the head of such "ticket." On this proposition the attormy general held that the law provides that all in dependent candidates' names shall be placed in a column to themselves, and not treated as a "ticket," and that the only way to get a ticket upou the bal lot is through the provisions of the primary. This holding means that the names presented by the democrats as "good government'' and by the Hearst party as "scales of justice," must go upon the ballot in *t single column, each with the motto over the name, and that the voter who desires to vote for any of these candidates must do so by placing a cross ut the left of the particular name ho dasues to cast bis vote for. Tucker, assistant paymaster general if the United States army, whose ar rest on charges of wife abandonment was reported from Decatur, 111., Tues day. Reports that Colonel Tucker's physical condition had taken a grave turn for the worse were discounted at his apartments in the Southern hotel, but Dr. Louis H. Behrens, the house physician, stated that an attempt to move him might result fatally. "The gold standard," exclaims Mr. Bryan In his recorded sayings, "has killed its tens of thousands." Mr. Taft's logical mind would not nrrlvo at the conclusion after his tour through Wisconsin, Minnesota, the two lnkotas and Nebraska that those ites would remain safely Republican !u,i! that he will lie fleeted president of the United States without having ample evidence to justify his belief. v man anywhere can look at all sides nt an issue with clearer vision than W llllam II. Tuft. lie has iu an emi u tt degree the Judicial temperament, the ability to give exact value to facts v. :hln his observation. He can dls 'vrn the genuine feeling behind the hurrahs and the handshakes, and he has read his own election in the audiences which have turned out to greet liim lu his tour of the great northwest Mr. Taft was doubtless certain to cniry these states even if he had not visited them, but his personal pres ence, his practical presentation of the issues of the contest, which Bryan has sn.ight by every shifty device to ob fcure, have served to make assurance doubly sure by bringing home alike to farmer and wage earner their direct personal Interest in Republican suc cess. "Ills genial manner, his kind dispo sition and his intense sincerity," says Oovernor Sheldon of Nebraska, "have ni.-sde a great Impression on our peo p!e. Nebraska would have gone Re publican anyway, but Judge Taft's visit has made the state thrice certain for him." As in the northwest so it Is in the middle west and the east, wherever American intelligence has had opportu nity for direct knowledge of William H. Taft and of the issues of the cam paign as presented by him. His sin cerity, his human sympathy, his clear grasp of great national questions and his frankness in telling just where he stands on those questions command confidence, esteem and affection, and he gains his audiences, not by any trick of oratory, but by the open, man ly presentation of facts and conditions as he sees them and as he proposes to deal with them if elected president of tlie United States. It is impossible to hear William H. Taft without being convinced that this Is a true man, who understands the right and has the will and energy to do the right by every citizen without regard to differences In wealth or statkm. And not only the northwest, but every part of the United States, wants Just that sort of man as successor to President Roose velt Bryan Doesn't Want Them. It is perfectly clear that If the sound money Democrats who revolted against the free silver movement have in dulged the hope that Mr. Bryan would Binooth the way for their return to the party fold by recanting his Intolerable financial heresies they are merely building a colossol disappointment for themselves. There is not a shred of evidence to show that Mr. Bryan's feeling toward them has changed la the slightest degree since he said: "They tell us that certain prominent financiers are going to leave the Demo- PHONE cratic party because it declares for the restoration of silver. The Democratic party has been weighed down by those who want to use the party organization for pri vate gain and their country for public plunder/* Mr. Bryan haa never had the slight est use for Democrats who refused i subscribe to his principles. He has repeatedly warned them that the\ were not wanted, that they should take their baggage along when thev left the party and that they would find it much harder to get back than it was to get out. For daring to op pose his reckless purposes Democrats like Grover Cleveland, John G. Car lisle, Richard Olney, George Gray, John M. Palmer and Simon B. Buck ner provoked Mr. Bryan's sneers ami ridicule. He refused to recognize them as Democrats and denounced them as plutocrats using their country for put' 11c plunder. Mr. Brynn is willing, of course, that the sound money Democrats shall vote for a free sliver candidate this year, but if they do it must be with the dis tinct understanding that It Is not he, but they, who have changed their views on the financial question. He wants tbetr votes, but he does not want the sound money Democrats as members of the party in good stand Ing. To recognize them as such would be to abandon Lis whole contention for free silver, and that, as he himself de clares, he will never do. Chairman Mack of the Democratic national committee insists that his first story to the effect that he had come into possession of a 'left over" cam palgn fund of $300,000 was merely "a blufT." This explanation Is equally true of the whole Bryan campaign. Mr. Bryan plantlvely submits that tu bas been a tariff reformer for twenty eight years, has advocated popular elec tlon of senators for twelve and has fa vored an Income tax for fourteen. A good fisherman in a case like this would be inclined to try fresh bait. Governor Hughes made some purm tures in the Bryan record in his Ohi" speech that left the record more badi disfigured than ever, if that were pos slble. The explorations of Traveler Brynn into the enemy's country are giving him vivid impressions of its extent and hostility.
