At an adjourned annual meeting of the Presbyterian church membership at the church last evening. Rev. Mitteriing presented his resignation which was accepted. Rev, John Lin ton of Flandreau, moderator, presided at the meeting. The resignation ol Rev. Mr. Mitterling will take efiect six months from date. Monthly Meeting How Woulc You Like to Be City Assessor? The city council met last evening in regular monthly session, the mayor and all members present except Al dermen Jones, Vidal and Seid. The minutes of previous meetings were read by Auditor Rae and ap proved. The usual official repoftts were afeo read and approved. Claude Wooley made applicaton for a license to perform electric work. The application was referred to the super intendent of the electric light plant to determine the competency of the appli cant. Hereafter all applications foi licenses to engage in electric light work will be referred to tne superin tenient. Petition was presenteo asking that the granting of license for the sale of intoxicating liquors at retail be submitted at the ensuing city election. Petition granted. The auditor was instiucted to issue a call for the Annual city election to be held Tuesday, April v!0. The same judges and polling places as those named in the special election call were appointed. The officers whose terms expire are Aldermen Jones of the First ward, Vidal of the Second. Krakowski of the Third and Seid of the Fourth. John McGowan whose team was re cently killed by a falling electric light w-ire at a ioint in east Fourth street, appeared before the council and the matter of the payment by the city for the loss was informally discussed. Mr Met Jowan estimated tne value of the team at The mayor and al dermen showed a disposition to do what was right in the matter, bat de manded a showing that the city was responsible for the accident. Mr. Mc Gowan did not make a formal demand for payment and the matter did not r.a.'h a stage beyond informal discus sion. The current bills of the month were audited and allowed. There is a .-acancy in the office of itv assessor, caused by the death of 1'etei Marquait. and Mayor Waskey is xperiencinK difficulty in filling the vacancy. It is bis desire to appoint a competent man to the place and has solicited several men whom he regarded as competent to accept the [Ksition. bat has so far failed to secure the acceptance of tie plum. A meeting of the council will be neld at an early date for the purpose of filling the va caaucy. HOTELTRAGEDY. Registered from Madison, S. D. —Woman Suicides by Shooting. Tvlei, Minn, April 1—A woman be lieved to be Miss Nettie Tbaver of Colombo*. Wis., shot herself to i}eatb in a hou-l here last night. As the HHC jnd principal will make no detailed statement, the authorities have so far failed to reacn the bott im of the affair. The couple came here last night and registered as Mr. and MTH W. J. Evans of Madison. S. D. Evans is s«id to lie the coriect name of the man, who is supposed to lepreseut a piano companv in this territory. Two reports from a revolver were heard from the room where the couple had retired. Evans shouted an alarm and those who answered his call found the woman dead with her life's bkxid runn:ng from two wounds in her head and body. She was dressed only in her night garments. It is believed that death was instantaneous. Etabs will make no statement fur tber than to say that the woman en tered hit rooai while be was half asleep ou his bed. He was aroused, he says, by the first shot and almost immediate ly a second one rang out He is lein£ held for further examination and it is expected the full story will l»e brought out. The coroner was summoned from Lake Benton and an inqnest was held today. The jury brought in a verdict of suicide. The body of Miss Thayer is being held by the undertaker awaiting instructions from Columbus. Wis. No light has yet come from that place on the affair. The woman was apparently about 30 years of age. Wounds were fonnd in her heart and temple. It was learned today that she bought the revolver from a hardwaie merchant in Tyler at dusk last night.
