FAULKTOS MAN
Appointed to Important Position
by the Interior Depart
ment
Faulkton, Aug. 13.—An important
luty devolves upon Prof J. F. Arm
trong, a well known resident of this

Chicago Swindler Makes a Busi
neaa of Grafting South
Dakotans
Aoerdeen, Aug. 12.—A letter was
received from C. H. Gregory of May
wood, 111., telling of being buncoed
ut of a small amount of money by
man named H. G. Hutton, a few weeks
ago, the man claiming to be a prcsper
ous farmer from Creebard. He claimed
to l»e a little short of money, asking
for a small loan. Mr. Gregory gavt
him the money and never heard from
him until a few days ago when he ran
across an article in the Chicago Inter
Ocean of August 4, which he sent to
the News. The item Wiis iis follows
"After being wined and dined as
prospective buyer of a farm worth
$25,000, at Lombard, 111., a well dress
ed man, giving the name of H.G Hut
ton, owner of the Hutton farm at Cres
bard. S. D., gave a fraudulent check
for $")(» to J. A. Austin, a real estat«
dealer, several days ago and has not
been seen since. The check, wbich
was made out on the Merchant s bank
of Faulkton, S. D., has been returned
marked "no funds." A letter from
A M. Moore, cashier of the bank,
states that several other checks from
Hutton have been received at his bank
and the Security National bank of the
same city for amounts ranging from
$50 to $100. These were sent from real
estate dealers in Chicago and other
cities, the cashier said in his letter
to Austin."
This man Hutton is the same man
who has secured small sums of money
from many Aberdeen men, C. N. Her
reid, J. L. Browne, Dr. Alway and
others being numbered among the via*
tims.
Hutton s scheme is to look over the
hotel registers and when he discovers
a man from this part of the country
will send up his card. When he calls
upon the Aberdeen man, he tells of a
section of laud, which he owns near
Cresbard and displays such a familiar
iai^ed in Judge Randall's court thia'ity with^the local conditions and local
people, that the Brown county man
immediately believes his story to 1
true. Hntton appears to bo a prosper
ous farmer and when ho says that

Series of Runaways Results
in Injury to One Work

Claremont, Aag. 12.—A. J. SAck
rick, a well known farmer living near
here, was the victim of an unusual
accident from which he narrowly es
caped with his life. A number of men
were at work in a hay field, when one
of the teams took fright and ran away.
Mr. Zickrick, being near at baud
with another team hitched to a hay
rake, started in pursuit of the run
aways. remaining upon his hayrake.
While his horses were going at. top
Hpeed across the field on the trail of
the runaways, a hole in the ground
was "iiconutered that threw him from
his seat. One of bis feet caught in
the machine and was badly injured.
He was unable to release himself until
one of his borses fell and assistance
arrived. The two teams running so
wildly frightened the horses attached
to other haying machinery in the field,
and for a time the field presented a
kaleidoscopic view of a mass of run
niin: and plunging teams. That Zick
rick and the other men escaped with
out serious injury or death is regarded
as little less than a mericle. Z
