"Yawning is beneficial," said a throat specialist, "and in certain troubles—sore throat, buzzing in the ears, and so on—I recommend artifi cial yawning. This is more helpful in some cases than the best gargle. "You see, during the act of yawning there is a considerable stretching and exercising of the muscles of the pharynx and soft palate. On these muscles the yawn acts, in fact, as a massage. "Furthermore, yawning contracts the throat tubes and drives into the pharynx any waste matter that, ac cumulating there, may have impeded the breathing. Nothing clears the throat like a good yawn." MORE MONEY FOR THE CABINET VICE PRESIDENT, SPEAKER AND PRESIDENT'S ADVISERS TO GET $12,000. Washington, Doc. 16.—The simpli tration is more flustered than it is pre pared to admit over the demurrer en tered by the Standard Oil company to the government indictments se cured against it in Chicago, argument on which has been proceeding before the federal court in Chicago this week. Situation Badly Muddled. John S. Miller, attorney for the Standard Oil company, was in Wash ington two weeks ago, preparing his case from the official records, and his contention has caused consternation in the department of justice. Mr. Miller holds that the new law was in effect from June 29 to June 30, and that it hereby repealed the Elkins law, and changed the circumstances under which criminal prosecutions for Illegal rebating could be brought. Wants Right of Appeal. The passage of the joint resolution brought back the Elkins law into tem porary life, but he contends it could not be retroactive in establishing the crimes which might havg been com mitted under the old law, and which were wiped out by the passage of the latter measure. Anticipating that it may lose these important cases, the administration desires the senate at once to pass the bill-giving the govern/iiept the right of appeal, in order that it can take the case to a higher court. BALKS ON SALARY BOOST. Turns Down Proposition to Raist Pay of Senators and Members. Washington, Dec. 16.—By a vote of 106 to 1SS the house of representatives refused to increase from $5,000 to $7,500 the salaries of senators, mem bers and delegates. The house, however, by an over whelming vote increased the salaries of the vice president, the speaker of the house and members of the presi dent's cabinet to $12,000 each. In anticipation of the question of in creasing salaries coming before the house there was an exceedingly large membership present, and the debate on the several amendments for in crease which were offered by Mr. Lit tauer of New York to the legislative appropriation bill was followed with marked interest. President Agrees to Withdraw His Order for Simple Form. Washington, Dec. 15. Simplified spelling received.a final quietus in the house yesterday by the adoption of a resolution favoring the return to the old standard of orthography. It was understood that this action had been taken as the result of an interview with the president, in which he had said that if the house should go on rec ord against the new spelling he would abandon his effort in that direction The house was prompt in meeting this condition, and the resolution was adopted by an unanimous vote. The president, it was said, did not wish to have spelling overshadow mat ters of great importance and expresse a willingness to revoke his order for the new spelling. MRS.
