A. Warner. The funeral of Dr. J. A. Schluter, who was accidentally shot, Monday, while hunting, took place at Aber deen Wednesday afternoon. Rev. H. Reinhardt attended tbe funeral bf Dr. Schluter at Aberdeen Wednesday. Dr. Schluter was an old friend of Mr. Reinhardt. Christian Oster, sonofJohnOster, slipped and feli on the sidewalk in front of the Northwest Blade office, Tuesday, and broke both bones of his leg between the knee and foot. Through the assistance of Rudolph Klipfel he was assisted orto tbe dray which he was driving at tbe time and taken to the doctor s office, where his leg was set and he was taken horne. Hsld at Whits Houst en Railroad Situation. Washington, March 28. —An Im portant conference was held at the White House Wednesday at which the railroad situation generally was dis cussod. Fresent were Secretary of Jhe Treasury Cortelyou, Secretary of the Interior G&rfleld, Assistant Secre tary of State Baoon, Chalrman Knapp and Special Counsel F. B. Kellogg of the Interstate commerce commission and all the members of that commis sion except Messrs. Prouty and Cook rell, who are out of the clty. The con ference lasted two and a half hours. After the conference adjourned it was stated that the meetlng was called to outllne a scheme to be pre sented to the next congress for the federal regulat ion of the railroads of the United States. The plan proposed by Jacob H. Schlff for remedylng the railroad situation, which has attract ed a great de&l of atteniion, was not taken up at the conference. Mr. Kellogg, who has charge of the Harriman lnvestigation, denied that this Question was bought up at the eonference. RUBBIAN EDITOR KILLED. Assassinated at Moscow by Unknown Moscow, March 27. —Dr. Jollos, ed itor of the Russkl Vledomostl, was as sassinated here by an unknown youth, who shot hlm with a re vol ver as he was leaving his residenoe. The mur derer escaped. Dr. Jollos was a member of the lower house of the flrst Russlan par llament. T 0 PREVENT A STRIKE RAILROAD OFFICIALB WILL RE QUEST GOVERNMENT TO INTERVENE. Chlcago, March 28. —The United States governraent will be asked to intorvsne to prevent a striks of the conductors and trainmen on the West ern railroads and if the pians of the general managers do not mlscarry the whole controversy will be submitted to arbitratlon. The general managers have given out a statement in which they declare that they will demand ar bitration under the Erdmann act. As a strike of the men would lnterfere with Interstate commerce, the rall road ofllclals believe that they oan ask the government to take command of the situation. The Erdmann act, passecL In 1898, provides for the arbi tratlon of labor difflculties where in terstate commerce ls involved by the chalrman of the interstate commerce commission and the commlssioner of labor. After fourteen days of work the well was capped but the great vol ume of gas found another way out through forcing open flssures over a radius of half a mile. At one place a hole three feet wlde and twenty feet long was torn. Tben the escaplng gas caught flre and has been burnlng ever sinoe. At one place a sheet of flame twenty feet long and flfteen feet hlgh U blazing. Tons of rock and shale were thrown from the cracks and con stant trembling of the earth ls fright ening the farmers and otl operators ln the vlcinlty of the well. New York, Maroh 28.—A commis alon haa been appolnted by Justice Fitagerald of the supreme court to de cide the question as to whether Harry K. Thaw is now sane. Hia trial be fore a jury for the murder of Stan ford Whlte will be interruptos pend ing the report of thla commission. ls the commission reporta that he is sane and therefore capable of advis ing with counsel and of understand tng the proceedings agalnst hlm the trial will be resumed, but if lt should be found that he ls not sane nor ca pable, in a legal sense, a petltion will be made for his commltment to aa asylum, probably that at Matteawan, for the criminal Insane. Justice Fitzgeraldi decision to ap point a commission followed a confer ence with the attorneys in the case. The justice told counsel that he had given the various affldavlts careful consideration, but as they were so widely at variance he feit that he could not properly pass upon them. Therefore he had decides that tt would be best to submlt the entire ruat ter to a commission ia lunacy. Mrs. Evelyn Thaw in Tears. As Thaw s counsal left the room after the announcement of Justice Fitzgeraldi decision one of them said: -It could not be worsa." Mrs. Evalyn Thaw was weeping aa she left the room to go to the Tomba priaon. The Thaw commission is eomposed of Morgan J. o’Brien, a former Juatica of the supreme court; Feter B. 01- ney, a lawyer, and Dr. Leopold Putael. Mrs. Evalyn Thaw broke the news of glustice Fitzgeraldi decision to her husband in the Tombs prison. She was accompanied to the Tombs by Messrs. Hartridge and o’Reilly, of Thaw i counsel, and they met Thaw ln the hospital ward, as the confer ence rooqa was occupied. Mrs. Thaw had nerved herself for the ordeal, but her announcement was greeted by her husband witb condolences. “Naver mind, dearie." he said, “it will be all rlght; I an. sane now, Just as sane as the judge is, and any fair minded commission will declaro mo so." DECLINES TO SERVE JUBTICE O’BRIEN REBIGNB FROM THE HARRY K. THAW LUNACY COMMISSION. New York, March 28.—Aftar the Jury which has been trying Harry K. Thaw for more than two montha was excused untll Monday morning, and the members of tha lunacy commis* sion named by Justlce Fitagerald had bean aworn in, thera cama the audden announcement tbat Formar Supreme Court Justice Morgan J. o’Brien, chalrman of the commission, had re signed. In a letter to Justlce Fita gerald. Judge o'Brlen stated that up on rallection he was forced because of the conditlon of his health and pro fessional engagementa to decline to serve as a member of the commission. Justlce Fitagerald lmmediately ap pointed David McClure, a well known attorney of this city and a member of Former Polioa Commlssioner Mc- Adoo s advleory oommittee of citlzens, to 1111 tha vacancy. Mr. McClure met the other members of the commission and was selected as chalrman. Later he announced that the flrst sesslon of the commission would be held thls afternoon in tha courtroom whera the trial has been in progress.
