geol iW»I ADIRONDACK FEATt'REH. A Land Lltll« Known, «ud!k»ae of II* Pt»rulli»rlllr*, So little is known, exceptiu a gener :il way. of the interesting region of the Adirondack*. comprising the North woods in the south, the South woods stretching well up toward Potsdam. who have lived a lifetime within its wide lorders, have but a perfunctory knowledge of its extent and varied at tractions. Its area is more than that of our three smallest states, and larger than that of Massachusetts. Persons coming to one of its many summer resorts, have said they should drop in and lunch with me some day, little dreaming that they would have to dine several times en route before tasting their lunch. There are no roads by which wheeled vehicles pene trate the regions proper. Four nigh ways pierces its margin from the four point* of the compass, and generally end at a large hotel, jerhaps several. Beyond, the wonderful system of lakes and rivers affords the traveler a pleesant way of locomotion in every direction. C'hildwold is not strictly within the Adirondack region, but located on the Bavuette river, some fifteen or twenty miles from the foot hills of its nearest mountains, about twelve hundred feet alxjve tide water. It has some object of consider able interests. The track of the great windfall of Sept.JjO. 18-15. passes through its northern limits. This great tornado began on the shore of Lake Ontario, and. gathering strength as it progressed, crashing through the forest in a straight line from west to east for more than one hundred miles, prostrating every tree within its vortex of half a mile in diameter, leaving as sharply-defined bounds as those of a mower's scythe. Where repeated tires consumed the fallen tree* and their germs a wild grass came in which affords extensive pas turage. Where decomposition was slower, a thrifty growth of young trees cover the surface. But in either csise it is thickly studded with mounds up heaved by the roots of giant trees, which are similar in apjearanee to some which have recentlv attracted the attention of arch:eologists in covered through 181J I'"|- III'' lmi.*|«mti.m ofM. army 4SV nver» Massawippi and a silverv chain of seven tributary cernible. During the hunt Dr. H. Itosom ^falls, into tin wmxls. In 1S7) Verplanek Colvin, an enthusiastic lover of natuii'. began a topographical survey of the region of the great COli aniore. This led to his being ap pointed superintendent of a geologic al survey inaugurated by the state in 1872, just a century after the first sur vey was ordered by the provincial government. Iu has first report he enumerated twelve new mountains of over four thousand feet, and two hundred new lakes which had never been placed u|onany map, and many never visited by civilized man. He lias discovered others since, whose waters had not Iwen disturbed since the Indian paddled his bark canoe over their silent depths. The virgin freshness of this region adds much to its attractions. The correlation of its *ind Like stt MUt are interesting features, which I shall notice in another letter. Ta liawus. Mount Marcy, with an alti tude of 5. J5H feet, is the highest moun tain of the Adirondack range, being exceed»*d only by Mount Washing ton and Black Dome of the Blaiuc mountains of North Carolina, east of tin* Rocky mountains. Mount Mack entvre, 5, UMl feet, is the next highest, wit)» a dozen more of from one liund- retl to two liumlrt'd f»M*t 1*».S.S. wllilo i ri""V tnl tlmt tllos« of loss •iltitu.lf. -ill. itlliuilltril)le WJONt OI It ss dlllUHH dlt Til.' lushest e« msiderable wuUM-is lake Tuka^jus, -'Tear ot the dense forest. It became a region of mystery, over which none can gaze wihout a strange thrill of interest, and wonder at what may Ik* hidden in that vast area covering all things with deep repose. It is not the deer of which we think, treading the deep, rich moss among the stately bunar- pages of the world's annals. Yet there are marks and traces here and there, which tell in a brief, irregular. and fragmentary way to those who can decipher such inscriptions, the prehistoric growth of centuries, the origin of rivers, spread of vegetable and animal life, and the a man. Mr. Colvin's glowfng dt-.« rij. tion does no more than justice to the I grandeur and pieturesqueness of th scene. His thousand centuries might read a thousand millenniums and not cover the vast period that these old nx-ks have battled with geoplastic forces. Recent explorations have developed the curious and interesting fact, that, the irregular and meandering outlines of tho metamorphic rocks are the zig-zag outlines of the Adirondack wilderness, and of the present range of the black lear and the panther. The pioneer settler and farmer instinctively, but uncon sciously stopped when he readied that line, and made his clearing on land underlaid by fossiliferous de po.sits.
