He has already begun to make improvements. —The Onida Journal of last week gets way up on its ear and gnashes its teeth, so to speak, in impotent rage, ami just because the WATCHMAN had it cornered on some of its false accusa tions and |ositions, and devotes aliout half its paper to the re-iteration of its abuae and assertions it cannot prove. —A shot-gun was prematurely discharged in the hands of as. Cahili, Monday, at Henry Potter's general store, blowing a hole through the front of the building above the door. A gun is a dangerous thing, even without lock, stock or barrel—particularly when the maternal head of the family gets after the unruly small-boy with the ramrod. —We have recently lieen eating bread made from Dakota flour, and must suy it knocks the dough from anything we have tasted in the bread line. The blade is worn down nearly to a point and there is no telling how much hair it has -raised." It is ground down to an edge from one side, only, as we sup pose the noble red man had found by long exjK*rience that it removed the "dandruff" more readily. Henceforth every man coming into this office must subscrilie Cor FCBE W bald headed. ATCHMAN or go out WW" uJl|»WUlJiI!aMlW i VOLUME I. CLIFTON, SULLY COl'NTY, DAKOTA, SATURDAY, AUGUST 18, Im. The opinion that the Territory will tie divided ami the south ern half admitted by a year from next winter, is also expressed. TT A Railroad for Clifton! Sixteen Hen Surveying Down Okobojo! The WATCHMAN feels like throwing up its hat ami hurrahing over the cheer ing prosjiects for a railroad through Clifton and Sully county. Wednesday evening a surveying party under charge of engineer Jas. M. Raymond and as sistant A. G. Wither—sixteen men with seven teams—reached Clifton. Though the party tried to be as mum as oysters, during the evening and the next morning our reporter puttied from them the fact that the proposed line is an extension of the Red field branch of the Chicago & Northwestern. The surveyors left Redfield and ran the line nearly north around the head of bald hills in Faulk county, thence south west, striking the Okobojo near the north-east comer of Sully county, and down the valley via. Clifton to the Missouri river. The road by this route would be aliout 110 miles long from Redfield to Pierre. The surveyor pro nounces it a very practical and easy line to build thus far. and though not prepared to say that it would at once be constructed on the present survey, said it was only a question of a very short time when we would get a road down through here. What is more en couraging is the fact that this is the second survey and that the party is making a record of both the curves and grade. The Chicago & Northwestern has just affected a lease for 00 years of a piece of ground one mile square on the west bank of the Missouri, on the opjio.site si^le from Pierre, of the Sioux Indians, which looks very much like a bridge at that point and an extension of their lines to the Bhck Hills coun try. Putting "this and that" togetlier, we feel almost like assuring the iieople of Sully county that the time is not long distant ere they may hear the sereaeh of the locomotive engine rever lierating among the hills along down the Okoliojo from Redfield to Pierre to make a connection at that point Inith east ami west, and it will lie a happy day for them. A Postal Bouts for Clifton. Arrangements have lieen perfected which will give Clifton a regular semi weekly mail from Blunt until Septem ber. commencing this morning, and a tri weekly thereafter. Frank A. Lee has the contract, and will put on a good covered double spring wagon for the accommodation of passengers and car rying light articles. He will leave Clifton each Wedm *sday and Saturday morning, until Septetnlier, returning in the evening, ami each Tuesday, Thurs day and Saturday after that date. GOOD FOB THE 0IBLS. Miss Alice and Imogene Russell, four miles south of Cliftvn, favored us with some of the finest potatoes of the season. Tuesday. If there are any lady or gentlemen agricultur ists in Dakota, or anywhere else, who can do better, let us hear fVom them or the Misses Russell stand recorded aa "taking the cake." Turns Up All Bight Alvin Bla kmaii, prool pi the man wto ao suddenly and mysteriously disappeared aliout two weeks ago, has turned up all right at his old home in Del Rapids, Minar county.
