Tick county seat question will
enter largtly into Polk county
jxilitics thLs year. The people of the
south end want the county
scat located at Indeiwndeuce and
the jieoplc of the north end want It
left right where It 1 at Dallas. A
new Jail and court hoiife are sadly
j needwl in Polk county; but owing
' to this sectional matter no county
1 court can ! elected that is pledged
I to build them at Dallas. The people
j of the south end will probably try
to elect a legislative ticket that will
in in favor of an "enabling act" to
bring the matter before the people
! at a -peclal election. For the good
' of Polk county jiolitics and for the
l general proierity of the county, we
I would like to &ee this vexed ques
tion settled once for all.
SKritKTAKY Vilas rendered a de-ci-lon
in a land case a few days ago,
which will be of Interest and com
fort to homestead settlers. The
settler in question was absent all
summer after making the first settle
ment: was again absent all the next
summer, applying the proceeds of
his labor to Improvement of his
claim. The third year he was away
from spring till January, to earn
more money to pay on the land.
Ik-cause of these long alisenccs, the
commissioner rejected the proof, but
the secretary reverses this decision,
and directs that a patent be issued
Polk county needs a Jail. That
fact has lieen demonstrated a num-
lier of times within the past year,
notably when thedooroftliestrong-
hold (?) was kicked down and Kelty
was taken out and hanged, and a
number of times since in escapades
of culprits. The last proof was fur
nished by two boys, incarcerated for
hore stealing, who burned a hole
through the floor of their
cage, dropped down Into a lower
story through It and merrily took to
their heel", to the great discomfiture
of the perplexed sherili'. Telegram.
