SOLS BT UBOMtSTS.' OR. WSLES' tV?9m9WV9VWW9m A SAMPLE Of the Discourses Indulged by Eastern Editors About Their Oregon Visit. We tnko tho following from n four-column editorial write-up of Oregon in tho Angela, Indiana, Magnet, of July 23; Salem, tho capital city of tho state, was our stopping place for dinner. It is a substantially built town of 10,000 imputation, with unusually wide streets, ami us sue is inmost us iuvci ns a prai rie. The Willamette river which is navigable! or quite large steamboats be tween there mid Portland, 52 miles dis tant Hows through the Western part tlio city, it wns mo design oi tlio local entertainment committee to tnKo liielr visitors from tho railway dopot, which is nearly a milo from the business part of tlio town, in streetcars to a magnifl cent park almost in tlio heart of tho city; but just after the cars were loaded, a falling pole broke the trolley wire and temporarily paralyzed the streetcar system. 'Twas an unfortu nate mishap, sorely mortifying to tho Salem people, who were making a mighty effort to entertain the editorial party most royally After waiting an hour or moro, the excursionists wended their wny to tho park, some of the ladies going in car riages and others on foot with tlio gen tlemen. In the park an elegant lunch wns served, every want of tlio visitors being supplied by ladies of Salem, who vied with each other In uraceful at tentions. Lunch ovor, carriages wero in waiting to tako tho visitors out for a ride, and most of them improved the opportunity to view the beauties of the city and vicinity. boon utter arriving in the city, the writer and daughter wero sought out by Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Gilbert, who spared no pains to make our stay in Salem most pleasant. Tlioy tiad seen our names in the lists published in Portland papers, and improved tlio llrst opjwrtunity to ilnd us. Mr. Gilbert and his brother. F. N. Gilbert, wero Steuben county boys, their father hav ing been the owners of the Jamestown lloiiriug mills many years ago. They went to the Pacific coast in 1881 , and have been there since. They tiro now engaged in banking, under tho llrm name of Gillcrt Hrothers, and appear to no doing a prosperous inisiness. Mr. A. T. Gilbert kindly took us about the city in his family carriage, driving to the Insane Asylum nml tlio Statu Prison, just out of town. A halt was made nt tho Prison, and wo were courteously shown through the insti tution, winch has between 300 and 100 convicts. Amem: them is a gray-haired man apparently sixty years of age, who is a musical genius, lie has u crude instrument of his make: and being di rected by the olllcer who acted as our guide to nitty for us, ho gave our party an exhibition which showed him to be a musician of wonderful ability. He is serving a 12-year sentence for forgery. Four miles from Salem, our tram halted half an hour that we might visit a Government Indian Training school, which has alwut 150 pupils Iwys and girls ranging in ago from 1 to 18 years. A full cornet band with an Indian lead er, nil the instruments in tho hands of Indian boyB, serenaded the visitors, piny tug national airs and other selections very creditably. Tho matron is a bright well educated Indian woman. School was not in session, and the pupils wuro dispersed ulxmt the shaded lawn in front of the buildings. Tho girls wear blue calico dresses, and tho lioys dark bluish gray suits. The children are from all the Rocky Mountain and Pacific Coast tribes, and there is n great variety in faces. Many aro bright, and somo are really hanusonio, while a few look coarse and ugly. Most of them speak English quite fluently, and those who have been there several years are per fect in their pronunciation. We con versed with one girl whoso brown hair ami almost blue eyes attracted much at tention. She said she came from Alaska six months ago, and that lin age is sixteen. Her color is very dark brown, but her features and form are quito unlike tho Indians of the Pacific Coast States. Try Allen's Foot-Ease. A powder to be shuken Into tho shoos.
