Willard, conllncd in tlio county Jull to nrmvur before tlio February term of thu circuit court tlio chargo of murdorlng T. I). Terry, attempted sul cldo early Tuesday morning by gush ing himself In four places with a pocket knife. His injuries aro not, however, considered fatal. At about hulfpnst six this morning Sheriff Durbln was aroused by his mother, ,who had Ikjcii awaked hy groans from the jail. An Immedlato Investigation discovered Willard wolterlng in his blood. Ho had gashed both arms on tlio insldo of thu elbow uud thu back of tlio right leg near the knee. Ho had also stabbed himself in tlio left breast, indicting quito a dcop wound, but a little too low to reach tho heart. When found ho was very weak, but Dr. W. II. Hyrd, who was summoned in haute, nttcndod to his injuries and s topi kmI tho How of blood. This despornto act of Willard' Is a surprise to Sheriff Durbln and those who havo had tho prisoner in charge,, Whlloho lias naturally been In low spirits, his usual quiet manner has not given any indication of a rosolvo to make away with himself. Deputy Sheriff Kstls had u short con creation with him Monday ovenlug, uud nsked him if thcro was any thing hu would llko to havo douo for him. Ho, nuked lor nothing but that ho would like to havo a knlfo to trim an Ingrow ing toenail, which was giving lilrn u good deal of trouble It was known that hu had such a nail, and had previously borrowed u knlfo from ono of tho other prisoners. KbIch therefore let him havo his knife, intending to get it later. Howevor, it Mlppvd his mind and Willard retained tlio knlfo all night. Wlllard's story Is that hu uwoko about three o'clock, and got to thinking of his situation uud of his family, do prhodof Ills support, and ho concluded thuthls wife and children would Ihj better off if ho woro out (it tho way. Ho then determined to accomplish his own lumoval, and tho knlfo supplied tho means. Ho must have kept quiet until ubout tho time ho was heard by Sirs, Durbln, for anothor prisoner in an adjoining cell only waked as Sheriff Durbln cumu in. Ho has been a very quiet and orderly prisoner, having very little to Hay either to tho deputy sheriff or to thu other prisoners. Thu theory of tho sheriff and tho doctor Is that thu deed was com mitted In a teuiiorary fit of muiital aberration. Ilia counsel uro 1'. II. D'Aroy and J A. C'nrson. HOP MEN MEET.
