UVIUH UJtl 6 I AM THE MAfj ??J!".W..!l!!i ?."? . last win,,. J. 1 .r - Following remarkable article ap peared in tho Portlnnd Telegram 0turdny evening, double-leaded on the first page under the above h&Ul lHg. , If there is any truth in tho above BHrmlBo let It be added that if the Fulton wing of tho party defeats Cake, THERE WILL PRACTICALLY BE NO REPUBLICAN PARTY LKFT IN OREGON. N8o far as Tho Capital Journal cah ltwrn tho Fulton leaders are lining up for Cako in tho valley counties, and" tho indications are that THE movement to give him a sol id party Vote is growing l STRONGER. Saturday night, aud It 'Tins a groat deal of food for thought:" To "Got Even" Is To Cut the Throat of the Party of Roosevelt. Tho chief mlstnko which some of Senator Fulton's most influential friends are making is In bolievlng that they are getting even with somebody by defentlng Cake. As n matter of fact whether a man is an advocate of Cako or Fulton he has precisely tho same interest in tho outcome. What Is now ntt iBsue is not tho election of Cake alone, bui tho maintenance of tho integrity of the Republican party. If that Is of any Interest to those who support Cako, surely for the samo reason it 1b of Interest to those who support Fulton. What is done this year wiil havo Its influence on what will be dono next year and perhaps for sev eral years, If Cako gets a beneilt this year, some one elso will get a benefit next year; but if Cako gots no benefit this year, in tho very nature of thlng3 there will bo no benefit for any other Republican next year. And tho reason Is plain. Tho moment you elect Chamberlain you proclaim n Democratic dictatorship in Oregon. Events entirely within tho control of tho Republicans them solves lmvo been hastening in that direction for tho paBt half dozen years. Chnmborlaln has not been built up by tho Democratic party. That party has been scarcely worth ll1..1 while mentioning. But Republicans uissenslons have worked marvels, They havo firmly established Cham; berlaln in 'tho governorship for n second term, and now it is possible, that in tho midst of his term they may tafco him out of the feovernor's chair and send him to Washington to represent Oregon in tho United, States senate. This is not Demo cratic doing; it is Republican doing., There arc many men in politics In Oregon who seem to think that UiIb Bort of thine may go steadily on! without destroying party supremacy. They seem very much more con-, cerned about gottlng even with men. of their own party than they arc Infighting thoso who are opposed to them politically. And yet, strango to Bay, these aio men engaged In active politics who themselves expect' In tho immcdiaite future to profit by party success. It is not easy to Im- nglno a more amazing condition of affairs. It Is well at this Juncture to look tho situation squnrely in tho teeth. If these gentlemen are determined to bring tho party down to defeat, let us nt least bo guilty of no self doluslous. As wo havo heretofore pointed out, In tho great sweep of things Cako Is but an Incident. Yot in his failure or success is bound up tho supremacy of tho Republican party In tho state. If Republicans are building up tho Democratic par ty, It cdn only bo dono nt tho cx penso of tho Ropoibllcnn party. If Republicans contlnuo to build up the Domocrntic party, one of theBo days they will have no Republican party left, and it may happen nt n timo when they themselves and their friends most need It. It is in pre cisely this direction we havo boon drifting for tho past half dozen yo'nrs. If It our purposo to contlnuo to drift, let us do so with our eyes wldo open, but at tho snmo timo lot onch mnn stand forth and nssuino his full share of responsibility. Let us know not only that wo aro drift ing, but who Is responsible for it, so that in tho final summing up tho deputy Democrats who aro now so nctlvo will in tho dnv of reckoning get whnt they havo earned.
