Tho Modern Woodmen of America closed its annual picnic Saturday ovening by. assembling in tho Wood men hall,' -and initiating a largo class Into tho order. There wero about 300 in attendance and after tho initiation work was concluded everybody sat down to a feast of Oregon strawberries, cream and cake. Tho picnic from every point of view was pronounced a splendid success. Prizes Avrnrded. Tho Modern Woodmen of Chema- wa won tho prizo for the handsomest float in tho parado which occurred in tho forenoon. Tho prizo consist ed of a silver cup, and a cup was also awarded tho Royal Neighbors for their float. Tho prizo for tho best decorated automobile wont to T. B. Jones, and tho $20 prizo for tho handsomest decorated store was awarded to 3. T. Barnes, of tho Barnes Cash Stord. The Brooks lodge won the $15 silver cup offered for tho log rolling contest, and the prizo for tho tug of war a $25 cup wont to tho Chema wa team. In the competitive drill held late in tho afternoon tho Modern Wood' men team of this city carried away the prize a 40 silver cup. The Salem team also won tho prizo ot tered for tno relay race, which was a $20 silver cup, and in the 100 yard dash John Holman, of this city won the $10 silver cup offered. Ono of the most interesting con tests of tho day was a nail driving contest participated in by eight women.
