R. Reynolds, the negro porter, who was arrested here yesterday .morning for an alleged assault on little 3-year-old Josephine Moss, Is still in the county Jail, but -will likely be taken to Rose burg today, where the preliminary hearlg will bo held. The sheriff watched the jail all night, as a rtJraor was afloat to the effect that a mob had been organized to tako Reynolds out and lynch him, and it is said that all that -was lacking was a determined leader. Reynolds covered every opening .if his coll with blankets, fearing that some one might shoot him through the windows. Miss Moss identified Reynolds as tho man. Reynolds, when Interviewed this morning, was sullon and said ho would not talk until ho got nn attor ney. Tho officers aro In hopes they can get tho prisoner to tho train with out tho people knowing of it, as it is feared that a crowd may congregate, and cause trouble. CARROLL INDICTED FOR LIBEL GOVERNOR OF IOWA IS HELD TO ANSWER TO GRAND JURY FOR DISMISSAL OF FORMER CHAIR MAN DOWNIE- OF BOARD OF CONTROL. Des Moines, la., July 20. Gover nor Carroll was today Indicted on a charge of libel by tho Polk county grand Jury. John Cownle, a. progressive, form er chairman of tho board of control of state Institutions and prominent politically, was recently removed from office by tho governor, who charged Cownio with Mismanage ment and Immorality. Tho indict ment Is based on these charges. Cownle, it was expected, would seek tho Republican gubernatorial nomination this Fall. He later abandoned the idea. Moses Cohen attorney for Gover nor Carroll, furnished bonds for the chief executive. The trial will prob ably tako place In September. o RRENTANO IN RACE FOR SENATOR Declaring that he believes In the direct primary law, and Statement Number One, John F. Theodore B. Brentano this afternoon filed with County Clerk Allen, his declaration of intention of becoming a candi date for the office of stato senator In the first district. Mr. Brentano gives St. Paul as his place of residence and address and says that ho is a Democrat In politics. He further states that ho believes in the direct. primary law, and Statement Number One, and that If elected he will vote for the people's clioice for stato senator vote for tho candidate who receives tho highest number of votes for that office.
