thews, La,, a strong appeal for opposi
tion to the free sugar proposed by the
Democrats, C. S. Matthews, tho writer,
declares that free sugar will ruin the

that the government derives 150,000,000

State Insurance Commissioner Fergu

At the age of 84 years and some odd
months, and still able to kick as high
as his head, "Uncle" Billy Brown, an
old Mexican war vet, made a remark
yesterday afternoon to an inquisitive
Salemite which made the latter stop
and blink. Uncle Billy came down the
street sporting a brand new cane. "Got
a new cane, Billy!'' inquired a friend.
"Yep," says the old soldier. "I am
just trying it out: may need it some
time when I get old." "Well, 111 be
durned, " said the passerby, "I'm only
40, and can hardly get along without
a crutch."
Mac O'Brien, alias William Burke,
who escaped from the prison here some
four or five years azo, was recognized
in a Seattle jail by Frank Curtis, for
meily superintendent of the prison
here. On the completion of his jail sen
tence he was turned over to the Oregon
authorities, and is now back in his "old
home," completing a seven years sen
tence of which nearly five years yet
remain to be served.
