Demorest's Magazine for December brings vividly before us the happy sea son of Christmas. It is replete with beautiful stories and poems appropri ate to that time in addition to which there are other articles of great merit and utility. The opening article is the commencement of an interesting ser ial by Julian Hawthorne, the well known and popular author. Jenny .June contributes a paper on "Women Abroad and an exceedingly amuting sketch is entitled "Joseph and his Brethren." The Household Depart ment is unusually full, and the illustra tions good. The frontispiece is an oil picture entitled "Merry Christmas.' The preliminary examination of 1!. L. Solomon was concluded last. Satur day night and resulted in the defendant being held to answer the charge with out bail. From the testimony adduced it appears mst probable that there was a tight at the ranch and that Bhobe was killed as a sequence. The defense did everything in their power to have, the defendant released but failed to contro vert the statement made by the del end ant himself—that he shot and Killed lihobe. The ant difference in the cost to the county between binding the defend over on his own acknowledgmerji, of guilt and having a trial before a ju ry where he could Oe discharged or pun ished accordingly as he was found in nocent or guilty, and that of spending the time of court and witnesses to es tablish no more than lie admitted is something likes?MM as he willyethave to be tried by a jury.
